View Full Version : A sad day......
Well for about the last four and a half months my wife has done extensive research on chameleons. She wanted a panther chameleon bad. About 3 weeks ago there was a reptile expo where we live. We went to it and there wasn't much to the expo, pretty disappointing. They did have baby panthers just what my wife wanted and really cheap. We didn't get one though. They was too little they was just at 3 weeks. Luckily my wife had done the research and knew how fragile chameleons are and they shouldn't be sold until they leave that critical time frame of at the very least 2 months. Just so many of them don't make it and she didn't want to go through that. Well about a week and a half later there was a guy on the chameleon forum she belongs too that said he had veiled chameleons ready to go. They was pretty cheap and he ended up being about an hour and a half drive so we didnt have to get it shipped. we went to get my wifes little guy a couple days later. when we got there we noticed how small he was right off. so we asked how old is he I thought he was ready to go. He told us it was 3 weeks (the same age as the panther, what my wife really wanted that we decided not to get because it was so young and fragile still) He also said that this was his last male and said all the other ones he sold was doing great. Seeing as how we went all the way up there and my wife wanted one so badly we went ahead and took him. My wife named him Kush for the first few days he seemed to be doing great. However he soon started eating less and less til he was eating nothing, He started sleeping more and more throughout the day by this morning at 7 when his lights came on he had turned really splotchy We knew that he was going to leave us here soon. My wife had to leave for work so I was to give her updates throughout the day. It probably wasn't a half hour after she left and I watched him turn to a grey color and pass away. When I spoke with her periodically while she was at work I had to lie to her. She was so tore up as it was and just barely keeping it together. So yeah today is a sad day. When she got home. she came straight to his cage with tears already in her eyes. I told her that I had lied to her while she was at work that he had died soon after she left. She understood why I did. She just sat there and crying looking at kush, telling him how sorry she was.

sad that someone would lie to make a dollar no matter who they hurt...i'm sorry for your wifes pain...hopefully the next time you can find an honest dealer...best of luck to you both
thank you. Yeah shes pretty tore up about it as expected. There is a couple veterinarians on her forum that has reassured her that her husbandry was perfect and she did everything she could. We learned a valuable lesson about only buying from reputable established breeders

I'm sorry for your loss.
Have you contacted the person you got him from?

That's very sad...
Maybe you can use your real world knowledge to help inform others so this doesn't happen as often?
Sometimes it just happens.
My first snake ever *never* ate, the breeder couldnt get him to after either. I made the mistake of buying "has not fed".
Then, I got a BRB - my third snake (got a replacement for my first snake) and she ended up developing scale rot through a freak water dish spill while I was gone for two days.
One time as a kid, I got a dog, and it was run over by a car 6 weeks later. :(
What im trying to say is, things happen. You had the right idea but caved and got it anyway, just go by your initial plan and you should be good second time around.
Yeah she has spoken with him since he has started getting sick he said that he had just had some more and he would replace him. My wife asked him if he would keep them longer this time until hes at least 3 months.

Good Idea! Sounds like a good breeder as well.

That's good he said he would replace him. That sucks so bad though. I have always wanted a chemeleon but after researching them i found it was so hard to give them the right care and then even when you do, they are fragile enough to die anyway : (
Sucks.
Yeah they are so fragile. The guy that was going to replace him is no where to be found now. Go figure. My wife is buying one from a well respected breeder it will be the right age and shouldn't be any problem this time around.

This comment was not needed... Petco has nothing to do with this. The blame is given to those that deserve it.

I am so sorry for your loss! It's sad when something you want doesnt thrive.
We lost an orphan kitten this summer, my daughter still cries for him.
Well update on the chameleon situation. Two weeks ago my wife got her new little chameleon Kush from a really good breeder on her chameleon forum. He is doing great eats like a horse and is so healthy. After nursing that sick one for a couple weeks taking care of this one is such a joy. My wife is very happy with how things turned out. She appreciates all your kind words thank you all!
