Hi everyone,

I recently had to get rid of my Turkestan roach colony and am looking for a new way to supplement my savannah monitor's diet. What experiences have you had feeding discoids to savannah monitors, or monitors in general?

How do they go over?

Thanks! :)

you also have dubias right?

I don't see why an Exanthematicus wouldn't take discoids.

Never tried.

all my monitors love them. not sure how dubias are but discoids will dissapear under dirt in a split second so make sure you stick em in a bowl they cant climb out of

It would let the monitor have a bit of fun tracking down and eating them, instead of just plucking them out of a bowl.

To a certain degree yes, but unless your cage is roach escape proof, guess where they can wind up.

My cage is pretty well sealed, but roaches and crickets both have found a way to show up in my living room, in the laundry, etc.

I prefer to tong feed roaches, better inventory management, no escapes.

However since it was mentioned that they burrow in dirt, I was assuming that we were talking about releasing roaches into the cage.
Any idea how they're escaping from yours?

they can squeeze through little cracks. it has to be around the edges of the door, I was kind of sloppy with the weather strips.

never had it happen with Dubia, I am greedy, the only females I feed my lizards are either burned out old hags, or nymphs.

Producing moms are worth too much to feed off.

As long as you are certain your vive is escape proof, it's really not a problem. I get the occasional cricket behind the couch "chirping" that drives me nuts. But the roaches have never escaped the wrath of my hungry monitors.

Hey thanks so much!

Sorry it took me a minute to get back! :)

I'm going to get some discoids and start breeding. Does anyone have any suggestions for sources? :)

I'm pretty sure her new viv is escape-proof and she's excellent at apprehending roaches that have escaped the tongs, and when they've hidden (of course).

Do discoids have similar dietary requirements to dubias?

They get about 2 inches right? Are there any species you suggest that get larger but don't climb and aren't hissers? :)
