My second Eyelash viper litter arrived this morning, and I am beyond exstatic. 15 live, healthy babies, no stills, no slugs. 10 pinks and 5 greens. To top it off, I got to watch a few being born, and emerging from the egg sack. What a cool experience! Now, prepare yourselves for some epic cuteness:Wow:

awww! so cute in their little tub!

I'm guessing the momma is the darling green and red girl that the red one is laying on?

Glad to hear there were no stills or slugs!!

Very cool! Now my question regarding hots how do you move the babies to separete tubs without getting nailed by another baby? Hope its not a dumb question I just know nothing about hots and their needs!

Thanks, everyone:D

The green one is the mother.

I use small hooks to move them. At this size, they wouldn't do much damage, anyways.

This litter in definitely the bomb! A pink bomb.

Hmmm I thought all venomous snakes were toxic from the start!

I'm a bit of a venom noob, how venomous are these? do bites typically produce fatalities? how bad is the venom? sorry about the questions, i'm just a bit curious. :p

botis
09-27-12, 06:10 PM
Oh, they are venomous from the start. It's just, at this size, the ammount of venom that they are able to inject is so minute, it's not likely to cause much damage. That being said, I am extremely careful with them, even at this size. I've never been bit, and i don't plan on starting now.

The adults are certainly capable of inflicting a fatal bite, though it's not very likely. They are blamed for a few deaths, annually, in their native range. I have not heard of a fatality from this species in the U.S.

Congrats on an adorable brood! How much, if at all, will their colors change as they grow up?

botis

Thanks again, everyone, for the comments.

The little one pictured gaping was doing that the whole time I was photographing them. He was striking as well. It was the only one that acted that way. This behavior really isn't too common in captive born Eyelash vipers. I've cared around 50 different schlegies, for various ammounts of time. I've probably been gaped at 10 times or so, and they rarely stike defensively. The father of this litter happens to be that rare, pissy, Eyelash viper, so maybe the little one takes after him.

They will change color pretty dramatically over their first 2-3 years. Their colors brighten and intensify. The brown/gray markings on the greens will turn red over time. Here's some photos of the parents, to illustrate this.

The sire, at 4 months old.

Also, check out this link. These are pics of one of the green babies I had born last year. The pictures are in chronological order, with the first one taken at a couple days old. You can see how much she's changed in just the first 10 months.

SO cute! Best pic imo.

I wish there was such a thing as a species of viper that wasn't venomous...I would snap it up in an instant! They are so amazingly awesome-looking.

Hey, everyone. Just wanted to let you all know that I haven't dropped off the face of the earth. I suffered a serious burn injury to my right leg while at work, back on Sunday, September 30. I have been hospitalized ever since, endured 2 skin graft surgeries, and lots of rehab and recoveries. I go home tomorrow, so I'll give more info then. I had a 3rd litter of Eyelash vipers born while I was in the hospital. 19 healthy babies from Ruby, the one in my avatar. More to come.

Oh no! Glad to read that you are ok and doing better. I hope your leg heals up well. I will look forward to seeing more pics.
