View Full Version : Harley - Central American ?!?

Harley is a snake I got back in January from a pet store, I was told her was central american but hes very dark and keeps getting darker with each shed. Hes my baby and I was wondering if anyone out there had any idea what he could be, I'd kinda like to know why hes so dark.

He looks Central America to me.

If he is from Costa Rico then they tend to be darker than most other BCI

Can't help with locality, but it seems he is darkening up very nicely. Extremely attractive imo.

As far as we know Harley is between 1-2 years.

Some people postulate that colder climates produce darker snakes. Think about it. Snakes are ectothermic and require the sun to warm them up. If their environment is generally colder then they require more direct sunlight to keep them warm. Darker colors absorb more of the suns energy than lighter ones. This is why your hotter on a sunny day if your wearing black clothing than white.

I got to thinking, after observing subtle coloration differences in my snakes, that if the ambient temperature is generally warmer the snake will become darker because of, in my opinion, the absence of sunlight or reduction in it will have a greater affect on a snake that is conditioned to a warmer climate. A prevention/safety measure have you...This is just from my observations of one of my snakes.
