Went out herping this morning specifically for Timber Rattlesnakes. Found a few, but not as many as I hoped.

i assume it's adapted to soak up the sun/heat,during colder weather ?

I'm not sure why they are different colors. I would have to think its to help soak up heat faster. It was cool this morning and the dark color phase were the ones we saw first. I didn't see the yellow phase until after 12:00. I'll take the variety though. Not quite in my backyard, it was a 7 mile hike today, but well worth it.

Is the black phase a common one? As I mentioned before I have never seen one that color and if I kept hots I would have to have one.

The black phase is just as common around here as the yellow phase. Although, I've never seen one that completely black before.

I have not come across any...luckily.
