And of course it's the saturday of a holiday weekend. I know I can keep him relatively still until Tuesday when his vet gets back in but is there anything I can give him for pain? He's 165 lbs.

You could give a couple aspirin in a treat or piece of cheese.

Hard to say without knowing/seeing exactly what is wrong but personally if it isnt constantly whimpering i would just make sure it rests, if it is constantly whinmpering i would take it to the emergency vet straight away.
Hope it works out well :)

There's no emergency vet around here Rob. He whimpers when he stand and won't put any weight on it. The pain seems to be coming from the hock or below, not the knee or hip. I'm hoping it's just a really bad sprain and will get better over the next few days but you can tell he's in a lot of pain.

Me and my ex would give our Great Dane aspirin anytime he got aches and pains (which he ALWAYS had growing pains).
I think the best thing to do is put some ice on it and try to keep down swelling if any forms. And of course try to keep him off of his leg. :)

Half a Hydrocodone? At that weight a whole one? Not sure if that's bad for them or not, my uncle has been giving them to his dog.

Feed him some infant asprin and keep him rested until you can get him to a vet.

I could probably stock a pharmacy with the prescription narcotics in our house between mine and my wifes, if we ever travel abroad we have to check in mega mega early and have all sorts of certificates and letters from doctors just to take them over the borders into europe let alone going somewhere like the US :)
Forget the paperwork, I just put it all in a condom and stick it up my butt...

Update:
It doesn't seem to be hurting him when he lays down. I consulted a friend of mine who is a vet tech. She said it sounds like it could be a really bad muscle tear. Also I found some duramax that my other dog (who passed away last year) was prescribed after having a tumor removed. That seems to be working wonders as my dog seems a lot less freaked out about his current condition.

glad to hear your dog's improoving pal :)

Sucks that things like this always end up happening at the beginning of a long weekend.
Hope everything works out and it's just a pulled muscle.

I can't really tell if he's improving or not. I'm out of duramax and the aspirin made his tummy upset :( My stupid boyfriend let him out this morning then didn't watch him and he fell in the river. FML. I just wish tomorrow would come already, it's breaking my heart to see him in pain. If he were a younger/smaller dog I might not be as worried but he's old, very old for a mastiff.

They can't/won't see him until 9:45 tomorrow morning! Guess they're dealing with all the other people's dogs who hurt themselves this weekend. It's only 1 more day but I'm so sick of seeing my big tough guy in so much pain. I'm so scared they're gonna tell me he won't be able to bounce back from this because of his age

Well we did x-rays and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong. Doc says King might have a partially torn cruxiate but we're gonna try him on some anti-inflammatory meds and a glucosamine regimin and see what happens.
Prognosis: He may be a big faker pants :unhappy:

The seriousness now comes from the hole in my wallet. He's worth it though ;)
Also, I feel better knowing the extent of his arthritis which wasn't bad. None in the hips at all. In fact his hips were perfect! Just a bit in his knees and hocks and there was a little bit of calcification (I think that's what the doc said) in the spine. Nothing more than a few mild signs of aging so if I take good care of his senior needs I can hopefully squeeze a few more years out of him.
