Hey guys. I looked in my terrarium today, and saw something that freaked me out pretty bad. I'm not sure how it happened, but... This is what I saw:

Does he need to go to a vet?

Wouldnt have thought so, maybe worth putting him on newspaper as a substrate until it heals to help keep it clean, neosporin (WITHOUT pain relief) is meant to be good to help heal things.

Main thing is to figure out how it happened so that it doesnt happen again :)

Okay, I am glad that the dry tail is gone, and I found the skin stuff near his water bowl (not sure how it happened, I shall be looking into it further. I just freaked that it was his bone showing (my ex fiancee's cat got his tail caught in a door and it stripped the skin, had a similar look to it) so I had had to get some advice. I've got him in a critter cage that I washed out until I got advice (and now until I get his terrarium un-substrated). Also, should I throw this substrate out, or salvage what is clean (which is about 99% of it)

Is it possible that he went under the bowl and as he came out it was heavy enough to trap the tip of his tail?

As for the substrate i would keep it for when you put it back in his viv :)

Something of the sort. I have an earlier thread about it.

That is very much so possible. His bowl is a bit heavy and he does burrow near it.

Well if he had retained shed or sheds on his tail it is likely the cause of the tip of the tail coming off.

The dried tip of the tail came off with this shed.
It was caught too late (in that other thread).
The dried skin already cut off the circulation to its tail tip.
Causing it the tail tip to "die" and come off.....

Just keep it clean and it will heal up.
And pay close attention when it sheds so the entire molted skin comes off.

Jlassiter: I will, thanks. I wish I had owned him before (I've only had him for..... 10 days.) I feel bad for the little bugger.

Dry tail???

^^^^^
no pal

its been retained shed on the tail tip

it will have restricted the blood flow to the tip of the tail, causing the tip to die and drop off

to the op
just keep an eye on it and make sure its clean

i would dab it with a DILUTED iodine solution, twice daily

it should heal ok,and leave a stumpy looking tail

i bought my black and white diamond jungle with it's tail tip like that, her tails fine now,it just looks a little fat, compaired to the rest of my carpets tails

cheers shaun

i am unaware of a previous shed

i was merely explaining the reason, for the tip of the tail being that way mate

cheers shaun:)

Oh!! LOL. I guess I just wanted them to clarify what they meant by dry tail ;). I know what retained shed does which is why I wanted them to explain what was going on.... :D
