Ah I always get mixed up with the 'f' and the 'p', darnit. :P Don't know why I always use the 'p'....
Either way. Beautiful bugger (teehee). I absolutely adore insect life... so long as they're unable to touch me. Well, the nastier / gross-er appearing ones anyways. Willing to bet I could get over my fear of the creepier ones with time and practice, but i'm more than happy with admiring them at a distance haha.

Nice solifugid, BB. Did you catch it or find it at an expo?
absolutely adore insect life....
It's not an insect, nor is it a spider. ;)
Looks like it may well be full grown. Too bad they don't live terribly long (at least in captivity). To the best of my knowledge, they have yet to be successfully bred in captivity. One of those beasties of which little is known. Very intriguing little devils.
Why on earth would you smash them just for being, baPhoon? They are excellent predators and just as deserving of their place in the world as any snake or other animal.

That is EXACTLY why I got it. :D
To answer other's questions, I got it at a pet store, yes, I would love, more, and it's nearly full grown. Shame they don't live longer. :(

I waged war on them this year. Got bit in the neck by one earlier this summer, hurt like hell. That started the battle. Plus one was about to devour my lil shovel-nose.

A photographer's trick, Shaun. :) The camera was extremely close to the solifugids which made them look larger than they really were.

That's a molt from one...the empty skin left behind. And yes, the size looks about accurate. They are not small, but they're not nearly as huge as the viral photos online make them out to be.

Definitely a molt, but without seeing the head section I would have to take the photographer's word for whether on not it belongs to a solifugid -- though I am very sceptical. Based on the photo, I would have to say "no, this does not belong to a solifugid". Why? One there aren't enough "legs" While soli's do have eight actual legs, they appear to have ten due to the pedipalps extreme length. In addition, the feet do not look right. If anything, I would say that this is a picture of a sea spider (a crustacean, not truly a spider).
As for the size, this would be extreme although there are some good sized soli's out there. (Again, the size puts the organism above in the typical range for sea spiders.) Just as there are snake species at both ends of the size spectrum, so there is a range of sizes amongst the various species of solifugids. Most are quite small -- around the size of a typical field cricket ... with some even smaller.

You know what's funny? It seems the snake lovers are the most creeped out by these things. Yes I'm a snake guy and yes I'm a bit hesitant to have one of these as pets but I've been intrigued by arachnids of all kinds for a long time. Maybe someday...

I got it at a local reptile specialty store. They have more, AND they ship (hint hint wink wink). So far it isn't nasty, but it's VERY active. I would say it's definitely faster than your average bug.

This. Although I couldn't identify what it was. It doesn't look like a camel spider to me. No, it won't get that big.

Yeah, I thought the shape seemed a bit odd for a solifugid, but I assumed it was because it was a dried molt. It does look a bit more like a crab-type creature honestly.
