Nice stuff once again Pete! I really like those Hypo pueblans. I have been working on producing some Hypo Oreo's. Here's a female I produced last year, and I was lucky enough to produce a nice male this year.(No pic of him yet)

It's a splotched Sinaloan......I don't know if there is a "locality" known for them.....
Captive Sinaloans originated mainly in Mazatlan and Cosala, Mexico.....

so cute! so, are milks fussy? do they tend to be overall, or do they calm down with age...considerably?
Jlassiter
08-28-12, 07:16 PM
Depends on the subspecies.....
Mexican Milks (anulatta) calm down nicely.....
Some hondurans do but they are a mix....
Large Black Milks calm down pretty good....
Some Sinaloans calm down like Mexican Milks.....
Pale milks, easterns and other American milks are typically squirmy....especially compared to other colubrids.

We really are into the same snakes Jimmy, great photos, the rocky back ground is a good idea.
Whats your view on the splotched gene, do you think in came from Nelsoni first, then breeders put it into the Sinaloan milk ?
Jimmy, what does a hypo Central Plains Milksnake look like ? have you got any ?

Thanks, we sure do like the same stuff. To be truthfully honest, I haven't done much homework on which one came first or how the gene was actually produced. I see it as the splotched gene came from the L.t.nelsoni first. The patternless gene came from L.t.sinaloae first. It was the next little project I was going to work on to get all the information and timeline together. I will let you know what I come up with.

Pete, I acquired the adult pair of double hets last fall, and was unable to get fertile eggs this year. Pretty much was not able to produce any hypos. Here is a photo from Dave Niles at DNS Reptiles who produced some hypo's in 2010 and 2011. My anery is possible het hypo as well. These adults are also the same animals that Gerrit worked with years ago.

Just to touch on this. Some of the original L.t.sinaloae that were brought in by Randy Limburg and a few others were not only collected in the two previous areas mentioned. Actually, most L.t.sinaloae you see in the hobby today come from a large stretch of real estate covered by these guys in the 1980's. They traveled Hwy 150 and Hwy 15 between Mazatlan and Culiacan and also towns in between. It is probably just safe to say that they where collected within the state of Sinaloa. From Mazatlan north west to Culiacan and from La Cruz north east to Cosala.
The Cosala that we see in the hobby today are just a line bred look from original animals that were collected by Lloyd Lemke and a line that was brought in by Don Wilson of 7 Generations. I cannot get any specific locale data on either of the lines except that they were from that area. So to be truthfully honest I consider them to be generic. They definitely are some of the prettiest and brightest in the hobby today.
The Mazatlan L.t.sinaloae that I have, originated from Jim Nyham in the late 1970's and was collected just north of Mazatlan, Sinaloae. This line stayed pure and was not bred into any other lines as there was 3 breeders before me that kept good data and never introduced any other line. These are one of two solid locale lines that we have in the hobby.(that I kow of) The other line is actually from Durango, MX and was collected 5 miles south of the Sinaloa border on a ranch.
A little more detailed information for you, John.

Nice Wayne L.t.t always has a soft spot in my heart as I collected the on Long Island as a kid. Most all of the spots where I used to see them are all gone and houses and commercial buildings now stand. Thanks for sharing, I think they are a fairly underrated species too.

This is their defense mechanism. It is called musking. Usually there is a fowl smell associated with it. They will grow out of that phase within time. Usually 12 -18 months depending on the species. What kind of milk is it? Musking is one of there down falls as captive species but fully makes up for that by their coloration and personalities.

Yes, they are underrated and so misunderstood.
too many generations of "old farmers" calling them spotted adders, one of my favourite things to do is get Carmella out when someone says to me "spotted adders are deadly" proving that milks are harmless.
So many of them get chopped with shovels and hoes due to this misunderstanding.. and let's not forget, many get killed for shaking their tails..
Another of their defence strategies is to shake their tail mimicking a rattlesnake to try and scare off would be predators. Usually winds up being their demise when they do this to an uneducated human.

They usually run $300 to $500 depending on pattern and the completeness of the spots. This gene is not simple recessive but more as a line bred gene. I should be producing some in 2013, hopefully.
