Hey guys i'm interested in buying a 9 1/2foot coastal someone in my area has. This will be my first carpet. The only reason i haven't bought her yet is because she is quite aggressive. I know she can be tamed down but not sure if i really want to go through all the work. I don't mind an aggressive snake, but I never owned a carpet before. how's their bite, strike range, speed etc. Also if i was to work with it what would you recommend are some good methods of changing her attitude. how long will it take. is it really possible with a 4 year old this big?
let me know guys i need some info from some experienced carpet owners.
Personally, i would never acquire a 9.5 foot snake for a pet that is aggressive. The choice is yours, and more power to you if you c,an undertake a project like this, but personally, i would get a baby.

It can be done, but if you're already questioning your level of commitment to taking the time to try it, perhaps passing on it would be the most sensible thing because at that size, you really don't want to have to try to find another home for her if it doesn't go well.
Carpets are fast snakes with a really good strike range and long teeth. While this animal would likely calm down eventually, you're bound to have a few tense moments along the way and would quite likely take a few pretty nasty hits during the process. It would also be a longer process than it would be with a smaller snake because it sounds like it's already learned that being defensive works, so that's not an easy thing to reverse - it'd take some serious dedication

carpets are pretty agile and strike hard and fast
i have found the older the snake, the HARDER it is to calm them down and stop them biting
imo if you want a carpet, either get a hatchling or a PLACID adult
as a first carpet, getting an agressive carpet, may put you off keeping carpets all together mate
imo you should give this one a miss
cheers shaun

Is it already 10 feet?
The majority of carpets calm down around the time they hit the 3 foot mark. They will even calm down without much handling, baby carpets are just very bitey and defensive for some reason.
Some carpets however don't tame out.
Maybe it's a keeper' issue, and not an issue with the snake, and maybe you can work with it. But I personally wouldn't expect a carpet that's still bitey at 10 feet to calm down...

Thanks for all the help guys, yea it was just a thought. It really is a beautiful snake and I believe it can be tamed down but I'll pass on this one since it would be my first carpet.

Have you ever handled a docile Carpet Python?
I used to like Ball Pythons most until I held a really nice jungle at an expo. Now I'm addicted. lol

Good choice. Is this Doms carpet? Thats way to big to tame and most likely won't if it hasn't calmed at this age. Glad you made the right choice instead of becoming a statistic or just plain pissed off when it doesn't calm.

Not an adult. biggest i handled was about 4 foot. Not aggressive at alll super flighty though. I think it's about to time i handle a big softy, see if it's my type of snake. either way i love the coastals, probably my favourite locale. hard to find a pure one.

Not sure who's is it exactly. And i'm happy with my choice too, hopefully i'll be looking into a baby very soon
They are such awesome snakes though, i would encourage you to get a hatchling or juv and work with it. I own corns, royals, and rosy boas (general consesus puts all three in top begginer and easiest to ahndle snakes) and my most enjoyable snake to handle is my IJ Jag Carpet. She actually is the only one that will calm enough to sit still with me. What gets me hooked is their intelligensce. Granted, i do not have a snake iq test or anything, but she is so unbelievably observant AND extremely curious. She watches us walk around, stalks my dog, you can watch her watch things. Its awesome. Only my monitor is this interactive

Carpets are just so inquisitive, and them being semi-arboreal, they just like to climb on you and go up up up.
Pretty much the opposite of handling a Ball Python...

I wish everyone had the option to go to an experienced owners home and handle a snake and ask questions. I don't personally know anyone with carpet pythons that I could go do this, but occasionally I handle them at my local reptile shop, but they don't always have them and usually kinda just walk away. What if I were to accidentally drop the thing?! Anyway, I think that's a great option and I think it's so cool you are willing to do that, Terranaut! I wouldn't mind going to someone house to check out their collection or to handle a hatchling, but I actually don't personally know anyone with a collection.
Can I come, too? :) lol

At that size....
If it has'nt settled down by now at that size chances are it never will.
If it tags you and gets you with a solid tag (deffensive) you will bruise and bleed heavily at the bite site...
If it tags you anywhere on your hand with a feeding bite chances are you will need two people to get it off you and may require stitches to mend the wound.
Just a bit of sobbering thought mate... hope I haven't been too abbrasive about it.

Yes my decision is final! Also terranaut your jungles are beatiful!! It's specimens like that, that make me want one so bad. I might find some time, and a ride to come down one day as I don't drive. Would be an awesome experience though!

Thanks. It's an open offer. As long as I am home come anytime.
Everyone who pics up a nippy newborn carpet should handle a big adult first so they know it will all be worth it when they grow up.

Agreed! I really dont mind a nippy baby though as long as it tames out. I feel like it builds a connection. You should have seen Pinky when i first got her. I'll post a vid of her striking and hissing excessively from when i first got her. She is now one of the calmest boas i have owned. I know snakes can bite at anytime but i just cant see this girl striking for no reason as many snakes do. Il let her climb up to my face/head and all(MY FACE/HEAD, not anyone elses). Although she still does hiss alot . Not an open mouth hiss but like a burm or retic hiss when you first approach them in their enclosure. Really cool, i love it!!

^That boa is now tame? Nice!
Can't say that an adult carpet would be as impressionable, though...
