Hey guys i believe George is going into shed. He has a blue tint to him, but his eyes are not hazy yet. Is the blue tint a sign that he may be getting ready to shed? Also my carpet always seems to be sitting on the side of the tank in which i have the heat lamp. I dont have a a UTH should i invest in one????

What are your temps and is it a ceramic or a light emitting bulb?

msavary76

Well thats one of my major problems dont have a thermometer gauge. have to wait till my parents pick me up today. Anywho Light Emitting Bulb.

You need to get a digital thermometer as a minimum but a temp gun would be ideal if you can afford it, so you can check the temps in different places. How do you heat of a night time or does it stay pretty warm where you are?

Umm i wasnt made aware that i needed to heat tank at night time. No wonder he is so inactive. ill fix that ASAP.

I use ceramic heat emitters (bulb with just heat no light) and the yrun 24/7 i do find that our carpet tends to sit undre the heat bulb for a day or so before shedding, and yes the blueish tinge is a good sign that this is going to happen :)

most of my carpets sit up their hot end, just before and after they shed

please invest in a thermometer of some discription,as its VERY important you know the temperature inside the snakes enviroment

cheers shaun :)

Hey everyone got a uth and a heat bulb for my snake. I can tell you without a doubt i know what was going on. He didnt have enough heat on either side of the tank. Also being in shed didnt help matters. I can also say without a doubt he is acting much happier. Also was wondering due to the fact that i have a screen top i know for a fact that my humdity is non existent so im going to get myself some wet paper towels and drape them on the top. Thanks everyone for all the advice. I still havent gotten a thermometer due to the fact that the wedding took all my money this month.

FORGOT TO MENTION....

His eyes are extremely hazy...

Sounds like you got it figured out, you can also use Saran wrap on half of the screen top to help keep humidity in as well. You mentioned your humidity was non-existent, if that's the case make sure you are misting the cage to help with the shed. Your humidity should be a tad higher than normal during shed. Hope it all works out!

Hey Evolieno My wife has starting misting about once a day. Should we be misting more???? I think so cause my Mother in law runs the ac 24/7.

Evolieno

Some people will say to do it less, some will say to do it more. I've heard both... The best way to know is to get a hygrometer, even if it's just an analog one for the time being until you can get a digital one. There should be one on both your hot and cool side. I will warn you though, if you get an analog hygrometer that has adhesive on the back, don't use the adhesive. I've heard too many stories about snakes knocking them down and it can get stuck to their scales and can cause a big mess and further health issues you don't want to deal with. There IS such a thing as too much humidity, so a hygrometer set on the bottom of the tank would be my first suggestion, and then you can gauge how often to mist from there.

FORGOT TO MENTION....

His eyes are extremely hazy...

his eyes will cloud up then go blue (its nothing to worry about)

after a few days, they will then go back to normal appearance...

he will shed 3 to 10 days after his eyes clear back up

You really need to get a thermostat and not just a thermometer. Changes in room temp will change the viv temp. A thermostat will keep you from cooking your snake if temps go up. If you are using a uth and it shorts out in the heat element the temps will go way up and kill your snake. I can't stress enough that a thermostat is a must. This is also why I suggest to people to get a great viv first....then the snake.

Ok terranaut ill get that thermostat asap. Also should i get a HubbaMist for my shedding jungle? Wouldnt it kinda be easier then having to mist him myself every hour or so???

Whats the humidity where you are?? I never mist my Jungle but we have 55% ambient here and he sheds perfect everytime.

shaunyboy

unless you live somewhere will ultra low humidity, your jungle should shed and live just fine without a misting machine, etc

carpets have no special humidity requirements

mine all shed perfect, but room humidity here in the UK.is anything from 30% to 80%

Ya see im not quite sure yet. My mother in law is always running the ac 24/7. And my room gets the coldest in the house. Any suggestions to raise the temperature/humidity???? Im think you know just go in the back yard and unplug the ac power. But then she'll just have the maintenance man come over and see whats wrong. So i dont know what to do????

i give my carpets, night time temperatures of high 60F to low 70F,with no issues

also the temperature in his tank will be kept up,by the heating your using in the tank

i'm sure your jungle will shed just fine mate

Like said above I had no she issues except for one time we hit 20% in the dead of winter so anything above 30% is fine. You would only mist once a day during shed anyway if it was needed.
