Stopping in to say hello. I've been a snake owner for precisely one week now, having brought home a hypo florida kingsnake last Thursday. He's doing well in his new home but I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions as time goes on. He's the latest addition to my household (freshwater aquarium, betta fish bowl (currently one baby delta), and a quaker parrot) and one that I look forward to watching grow up.

Looking forward to being a part of the forums here.

This is "Hector". Was told to keep paper towels down for the first couple weeks because it's easier to make sure he's transitioning right and staying healthy - pooping and no mites or anything. That sound right? Been a week so was going to keep them in there another week before moving to a better bedding.

Nice little hypomelanistic L. g. floridana......
Looks good. How is the temp gradient?
Hot side temp / cool side temp?

I've been trying to get that to a good point. With an UTH and 75 watt bulb on one side, it was 80/85 during the day and 75/80 at night when I turned the bulb off.

Without the UTH and a 150 watt bulb, it's 82/92 during the day and then I turn the UTH back on to keep it 75/80.

Which sounds like a better setup? Currently in a 40gal tank. Also, humidity is about 30-35% during the day and about 50% at night (I made a homemade humidifier out of an air pump and jug of water - very low humidity in my place - was at 15-20% before).

Also, for food, he's about 15-16 inches and I've been giving him 2 pinkies (frozen) when he curls up in a hide on the cooler side. So he ate on Sunday and again tonight. On Sunday after he ate the 2 pinkies he spread out and seemed content. Tonight he was looking for another one - coiled, wiggling his tail, and staring at me. I didn't have one ready though. Should I be giving him bigger mice or more or is that sounding just right? The pinkies seem just right for his jaw size and I can point right where they are in side of him after he's swallowed them. Just don't know if he'll stop when he's full or just keep eating until you stop, like a goldfish?

(should these type of questions be in the Kingsnake Forum?)
