Saw this sneaky bugger while out canoeing the other day. Thought I had recalled someone IDing a similar snake as being a water snake. Location: SE Michigan.
Sorry about the less than stellar picture quality.

Head looks like a nerodia but I can't be sure without a better picture.

It's a water snake. I have no doubt about it.

Thanks, Wayne!
Unfortunately, Zach, these pix are as good as it gets. Sorta surprised it came out as well as it did. I was using an inexpensive point and shoot waterproof camera and -- in all honesty -- shooting blind. The snake was behind and to the side of me. A friend handed me her camera which I then aimed in what I was hoping was the correct area without turning around or using the view finder as I was fairly certain the snake would bolt if I moved. After taking this shot, I did try to gradually turn to face the snake and get a better pic, but sure enough, as I started to turn it shot into a mass of exposed tree roots and disappeared.

when they sit on the bottom of a pool of water, those bands blend in with the rocks, makes them almost invisible.
The crazy belly pattern blends in with the ripples on the surface, making them invisible to fish from below.
It's a really awesome use of camouflage.
I've never seen one, guess I gotta keep my eyes open! Are you from the area?
