View Full Version : Profile: Reaper
Hi guys! So I thought I should do a little update on Reaper, our G. Rosea. We have had him since the end of April and he has been awesome!
Although not until recently has he shown interest in food and has eaten. I know they can last a long while without food it was still a concern because we both had very little experience with any kind of Invertebrate :P
But since we have had him he has molted and looks stunning! When we first got him he was only an inch across and is now almost 2 inches across.
Although I'm thinking now that he is eating he will be growing like mad and become a monster in no time!
The reason we chose Reaper as a name is because when we had fed him he ran and literally jumped on top of his prey grasping it in a flash. Simply awesome to see! I haven't held him in a while as it seems like he is always in hunting mode now since he has been fed so I'm afraid of getting bitten....Any suggestions on how to deal with that? Or should I just suck it up? haha.

Lookin good! That rump is still round, so it's probably okay on food. You could offer smaller crickets or worms, to entice, but when was the last molt? May just be holding out for a molt. It's still pretty small though, so growing should be it's priority...therefore it should only be going off food for a molt.
Maybe check temps and make sure it's warm enough for it.
Plenty of water for the molting.
Other than to just check on that, looking good!
He/she molted about a month ago and has been fed now for the past 2 weeks and is doing really well. His rump is larger now and seems to be a healthy size. :) Thanks!

Wow! I have a rose hair but he was much larger than that when I got him, probably an adult since he spans my entire hand. I didn't realize how much they changed in so little time while they're young! That's really cool! :)

Since before the Expo where we picked him up I have only seen adults as well so it was pretty cool to see a young one. I think the best part is watching it grow and change from that age :D Thanks for the comment! I can't wait until he/she is that big :D

i have never been bitten by a tarantula, and hope to never be!
usually rose hairs are very docile. I have one that you can poke, prod, lift up a leg, she doesn't care.
I do have some others that i won't bother. You can tell when they want to be messed with or not. lol

I have been bitten by my rose hair and my hand was swollen for two weeks.
If you do have an aggressive rose don't **** with it!!

No bites received here either! And that does not sound good at all, 2 weeks? All I've heard of is that it feels like a bee sting....but that can't be true. What did it feel like? :/
I was confident enough to try picking him up again after a few days of leaving him alone. He was great! Once I took him out he cuddled into the palm of my hand and tried to sleep. You could nudge and play with his legs no problem :)

I wish mine was more like that lol. Once I get him out of her enclosure he likes to explore...just ambling along. I don't take him out much though. I bought him so I could get over my fear of spiders. But I love watching him when he's actually moving around in his home. Watching him eat is fun!
Hmmm....I really need to take him out for a few minutes. I haven't gotten him out in almost 2 weeks. Gotta get over that fear, ya know ;)
I'd love to see pictures as yours grows. Once I get more confident in handling him, I'm thinking of getting a young one so I can enjoy it's color changes. :D
eeeeep. i couldn't get one. not even to get over a fear. too big, too spidery and too hairy. they feel gross when crawling on you too (held on in like, 8th grade)

My female got me with both fangs and she didn't let go for like ten seconds I got a pretty good invenomation and it hurt like ****. Also she is quite a big girl at almost 6 inches in diameter. For some reason my female is super aggressive and bites anything she is like a cobalt blue!!
I will star6t a thread later today with pics.

When we were at the expo the lady behind the counter took him out easily and he just curled up in her palm and then gave it to us to hold and see what it was like (first time for me). He was great and calm, and actually kinda cute! So $15 later he was ours! :) I bought him for the same reason though, because I am afraid of spiders being on me, not necessarily in the room. It has been a great experience so far though! The other day my bf was trying to get him out of his enclosure and he reared up and lunged forward almost getting him in the finger. But I tried and it was no problem, so who knows what his deal is? haha.
You should! It's really neat to see how much they change and how much they grow in just one molt :D

Awe, I feel you though, I couldn't get an aggressive one or anything like that. Starting with a younger one helped a lot! It's a very different sensation when they walk on you, especially comparing to a snake :P hehe

Holy crap, those ten seconds must have been one of the longest 10 seconds. I couldn't imagine getting bit, ugh. She's huge too, mines so tiny compared haha.
That would be awesome! Pics are great :)
