View Full Version : thinking bout getting some new additions
I am looking at getting 2 bp from a Craigslist ad. 1 is suppose to be like 3yrs or so and the other is about a yr younger. i have a few questions about their size and how they are housed now. I don't think they are big enough to be that old. They are being feed every 2 to 3 weeks. 2 live mice each. they are both in a 50 gal aquarium. It has a sand bottom. on 1 end it has a heat pad under the sand. also has a heat light. screen top. over the heat pad is a rock hide. it has a temp tape, i don't think it works. any help would be great.
I would wait until you understand taking care of just one..you need to focus on getting her healthy before you overwhelm yourself. Trust me, there's plenty of time to add to your collections, especially normals. Those two are VERY skinny, with a prominent spinal ridge, and you don't know anything about what could be wrong with them (RI, parasites, bad eaters, etc).

+1. If you have one at home recovering then I would agree with IBaman. They are already plenty skinny and not eating enough at their age. This also opens the door for other issues they may not be aware of or even telling you. Second you would need to get a whole new setup as its not great to keep them housed together and that's going to cost a bit more as well

Anything from Craigslist is like buying a used car from a used car lot. Occasionally, you'll get that good deal but more often than not, you're buying someone else's headache. Make no mistake. It is buying and selling on Craigslist btw. Anyway, you need to understand what you're about to do is a rescue judging from the pics. If you can pull it off, more power to you.
the other bp i have at home is not mine. it will be going home after it is better. i am maybe looking at a getting just 1. but i am also thinking of just starting with a baby or just 1from a good place

This is the way to go IMO. Just avoid Craigslist if at all possible.
I agree, pass on them.
However, neither of them look skinny.
They both look outwardly healthy.

Are they gonna stay healthy living on sand?

+1. Their enclosure isn't ideal and their diet is just very much a maintenance diet but from the pics they look okay.
also. they will come with another 30 gal tank. i am not liking tank set ups. after putting that bp in a rubbermaid type container, i will be switching all of them over to this type

Your heart is in the right place and I don't doubt that you could take care of this snake or any other bit I must repeat this and this comes from personal experience. Craigslist = BAD!!! Most snake purchases from Craigslist come with a long list of problems.

Remember a fat snake is not a healthy snake.
Yup, what EVERYONE has already said: STAY AWAY.
BUUUUUT we all know that you're gonna do whatever you want anyways despite our advice, so whatever...

No way!
Serious?
Explain.

even for being 3 years old? I thought they looked skinny...even my guy, who is TINY is bigger than those...and he's only on 1 large mouse a week (won't go to rats. working on it)

Thanks for the sarcasm.
There is no sarcasm intended here. My last three purchases were from Craigslist. Medusa, my Burm came full of mites. Fortunately that was treated. Also Khorne and Stheno, myBloodred Corns, are currently being treated for RI. As long as I live I will NEVER EVER buy another snake from Craigslist again. So let it be written, so let it be done.
SM12: no worries. Please explain.
iBaMan: Doesn't matter how old they are, for their length, they look well-fed and healthy.

Good to know, thanks! =]
No problemo!
Are they undersized for their ages? Yes, but for their proportions, they look good.

He was probably making reference to obese snakes. Though I'm not truly convinced they exist. I saw something once on a how snakes will gain weight around their internal organs more than their exterior. It's a sensible theory though I'm not sure how you could tell if a snake was too fat. Probably not something that could be done with the naked eye :hmm:

Sorry for the misread. With Mykee, I just consider the source and move on. No worries.
Still waiting for an explanation. That's a pretty bold statement to make to not back it up with something factual.
Ex, the title under you handle is very fitting.
I think you misspelled it though; shouldn't it just read "dum" without the "s"?
Lol!!!

I never claimed either of the snakes were overweight. Don't assume. Do you know what the first three letters of assume are?

Whatever Mykee....
"I never claimed either of the snakes were overweight"
I understand that, and woudl never assume anything. I would just like you to explain what you meant by a fat snake not being a healthy snake. I've seen, owned and produced a LOT of snakes and never once have I seen a "fat snake".

I am reluctant to compliment you but that just means you have been doing everything correctly.
I have seen a ball python at the oaks reptile expo that was three feet and must have been 6 pounds. Shoulda got some pics.
Ball pythons will NOT eat themselves into obesity (I'm sure some breeders have tried). Unless they were force-fed liquified rats intraveinously 24 hours a day, I am reluctant to agree that there are in fact overweight ball pythons out there.

Sorry for popping in and saying something off topic, but I think obesity in snakes is bad because the fat stores inside of them, around the internal organs, can get too big and start smooshing the organs... Just something I read somewhere, not sure if it's true.

Thank you Ivalynfyre. It's true.
so if i do decide to get them will they grow to a normal size with normal feeding. they just look so small for the age they are suppose to be. they seem health at the time i went. it bothered me that they were kept on the sand. also it look like the heat pad was for like a 10 gal. and not for the 40b they were in.
i think i will just get 1 from a good source. and a baby so i know all about it from the beginning.
thx for all the info.
Yup, what EVERYONE has already said: STAY AWAY.

You called it...haha
I just said i wasn't going to get them. i just wanted to know if they would grow to a normal size if you fed them normal.
ohh, my bad xD Usually they will grow to the size they should be, just may take a while. they'd probably always be a little undersized tho. (could be wrong there)
thx. wasn't trying to be short. just was letting u know
It's hard to make me argue online, no worries ;D (I work customer care). I just read it wrong is all xD

Generally speaking, an obese snake is a snake that you can see skin between it's scales. It's rare but does happen. A lot of people overfeed their corn snakes and they develop "hips" so to speak. Kind of just fatty deposits near where hips would be.

Well, it was mentioned that both snakes look to be in good condition for their undersized proportions.
What was the point of your comment then? How come you haven't explained what truly is a fat snake? If these snakes aren't fat then seriously what did your first comment mean? I don't get it....
