Greetings carpet community. Tuesday morning i will be recieving a 93.75% irian jaya jaguar het granite female. She has fed a few times on f/t mice and was hatched on april of this year. I am making her enclosure and setting up this weekend. If anyone has any pointers or advice i would greatly appreciate hearing about your experiences. Thanks guys.

Lots of things for her to climb on in the viv and get her feeding on rats on her first feed with you. Great choice in snake, I am sure you will be happy with her :)

First of all, great taste. Granite carpets are some of my all time favorite snakes, good luck producing them.

I suggest you get it eating f/t rats, instead of mice. As your carpet grows it will need rats as adult mice are way too small for a carpet. The problem is, some carpets get "hooked" on mice, and will start refusing rats. So it's better to switch it over to rats asap. The older the carpet, the harder it is to switch over.

Congrats!

Be ready for some nipping. Lol. Baby Carpets are nippy little buggers. But they calm down and make the best pets in my opinion. My girl is puppy-dog tame. She is my favorite. Best of luck with your new little girl! :)

^This. Baby carpets are bitey, but the majority tame down by the time they reach 3 foot.

Anything special i should do to "tame" or just keep handling? I was planning on starting her off in a 24x12x20 so she doesnt get overwhelmed, then moving her up into her adult enclosure in a few months.

Yes, just handle her. Give her about 5 to 7 days to settle in to her new home before handling her. I wore gloves when I handled my girl when she was nippy. I felt it made me few more confident and I feel that is a big plus when trying to handle a nippy snake.

One thing i have found with the carpets i have handled compared to other snakes, ANYTHING that bobs around within three feet of ther face WILL get tasted in case its food. Be careful where you move your hands (and those around you too) as they do seem to be very prey orientated :)

There was a great "how to" video posted on here on how to "tame" your carpet. Most important thing is if/when he strikes try not to pull away. My Lucy just gives a little headbutt now and then climbs on my hand.

My Jungle Carpet (a couple months old and about 20 inches long) is not nippy at all, which seems to be the exception. That said, he can definitely sense when someone is anxious and is noticeably more anxious himself. Anything you can do to make yourself more comfortable will probably make your snake more comfortable.

Awesome stuff, thank you guys so much for responding. What kind of substrates do you guys use? I was trying to find something natural, but so many "natural bark" oriented substrates contain some pine.

Very nice looking carpet and the sire is a looker as well.
I use orchid bark substrate for mine.

In terms of substrate i use repti-bark, it can be expensive but i get it at cost price in 25kg bags :)

Orchid bark? Genius! That's way cheaper here (they don't sell cypress mulch except for repti bark, and that gets a little pricey.)

In Terms of Substrate, I tend to mix my own, Get a bulk brick of the Coco husk stuff from home depot, A bag or two of repti bark, and a brick of the moss stuff All of my snakes love it to death, and that blend makes a Massive amount of substrate
