Hey guys. so my retic S t r i n g e r is ranging around 4-4.5 feet now. You guys might hate me for it, but today i found him a new home far from the area.
The reason i did this is because he is illegal in my city and i know i shouldn't have ever bought him to begin with but it was my mistake. It was hard to do but somehow i think it was right.
I made sure the person knew what they were doing, and he plans to breed him in the future. He showed me some of his other retics and i was pleased with what i saw.
It was a trade; My retic, for his pastel boa (really red), enclosure, and a bit of cash. The boas a little feisty but i'll post some pics in a bit.
Well let me knoww what you think about my actions guys. was it the right thing to do? orrr...:sorry:

Yes. I believe that abiding by your local herp laws is part of being a responsible herp owner. So if the person you gave him to will be giving him a home, yes, you did the right thing :)
Now, lets see photos of that boa!!!

Yes alessia i agree. It was hard as that was definitely one of my favourite snakes ever owned. but i guess i'll just have to wait until either the laws change my way(highly unlikely), or i make a move to some place where keeping these giants is allowed. and sure here are some pics.

She is NOT a hypo or salmon. as red as she is. she's just a normal pastel who is unusually red. neither of her parents are hypos, but her colours are close to it. her tail doesn't resemble a hypo tail. She's more red and has less yellow compared to my hypo.

very nice call on it.. with our hobby always in jeperdy, its good to follow all laws to help prevent other ban or outlandish laws... very good job on that...
as for the trade, i too think it was a good trade!! i dont know much about retics but that boa is very nice!

FYI - In Toronto (I believe all of Ontario as well) all snakes which reach an adult length larger than 9.84 feet are prohibited. Large Boas are not exempt to this rule. Just some food for thought.

^The boa most likely wont hit 10 foot.
A Retic would no doubt.

That is incorrect as length limits are the result of municipal bylaws. Toronto does indeed have a length limit as do a number of other municipalities.
That being said, there are a large number with no limit or simply additional requirements such as registration past a certain length.

^^ Agreed. Although it is not an impossibility and it's a good idea to keep in mind that snakes continue to grow throughout their entire lives.

I did mention "I believe" for the rest of Ontario. I know where he lives and it applies to him as well.

That law is correct for us as well. Although i'm pretty sure boas do not get sucked into this.
They are sold is many petstores (not supporting franchise petstores) but i spoke to a local reptile store who in my opinion knowos what they're doing and they said boas are infact legal in my city. ALSO kijiji will automatically remove any ads posted on large pythons, anacondas etc.. but never remove any boa ads. Not saying this is a reliable but just a thought.
although it IS possible for boas to grow up to 12 foot sometimes its highly unlikely and i wouldn't say average.

Each region has it's own bylaws. My snakes are all legal here but drive 10 min to Guelph and most of what I have is prohibited. You have to check with where you live. I assume the OP lives near Toronto but unless it's Oshawa most of the surrounding regions are ok with boas. Just call your area Humane Society and tell them you are considering the purchase of _______? and ask if it is prohibited , restricted or banned. I have many restricted snakes but they are all registered and legal.

Well I just checked out the bylaws where you live and its a grey area. Snakes under 3 meters are ok. Typicaly your boa will not be that large as stated above so I assume that like here it will be up to your local humane society to determine if its an acceptable breed. But once registered they can not be taken away even if they pass a no boa at all type law. Unless you are mistreating them or something. I would still call and ask as if you were buying or moving into your area. Good luck. Should be ok!!

guy just called back. told me about how in the past there were NO snakes allowed and now there are with a limit of 3m. he said boas are fine usually, except for the larger locales, and he says although they average under 10 feet, if the authority's come across an individual pushing that, they will most likely take the snake.
so i'm good!!

No worries.
I had spent many hours researching the bylaws in different areas in order to help with input on new ones in my area.
It is sad to see a lot of places place arbitrary rules on responsible owners.
OP - Really sorry that you had to give up Strin ger. A retic is #1 on my most wanted list however I'll probably have to stick with a SD. Have you tried to make contact with your municipal office for discussions on bylaw feedback? My approach was to focus on animal well being & safety with consequences being in place for inappropriate/insecure enclosures for them. Plus a clause for registration of animals once they exceed 3 meters. If you need more info send me a message and I'd be happy to provide more info.

Yes i did. That's what the call was about in my last post ^
And i agree although they seem to consider SDs and Dwarfs in the same category as burms and mainlands. Since they can never really be sure of the bloodline.
