A retic is my dream snake! I was sooo close to getting one this summer, but other things have happened. I could still get one but I'd rather wait until I know I'll be able to properly care and house one. Until then, I live vicariously through other retic keepers :)

Next I have another of John and Phil trying to wrangle George while Calypso made herself into a hat on Phil's head, lol.

I almost bothers me that most of these pics are of young retics. Doesn't anyone have a 15+ ft retic they have had for years? If not why not? Lots of babies but few adults... Please prove me wrong :( are people killing them (accidentaly of course) before they get older or just not posting??

Slcburm
08-08-12, 08:30 PM
Uhhh no. This is my first ever and no I won't kill it. Where is your 15ft retic? Or did you kill it before it got that big

iBaman
08-08-12, 10:00 PM
Seriously?! Killing them?! What is your problem?!

Terranaut
08-08-12, 10:24 PM
Lol I didn't mean you people were killing your snakes I am suggesting that a lack of adult snakes in this thread vrs the amount of retics sold is making me wonder what is goin on. I was not insulting anyone on here. I just am pointing out retics easily and quickly get over 15ft but most of what I see in this thread are under 7ft. So where are they? I know a couple people on here with them but those people haven't posted.
If you look at picture threads about other kinds of snakes such as boas ,carpets or royals the majority of pics are adult or sub adult. Most of these retic pics are not. See what I mean now?? Chill out !!! I am wondering if these are like monitors. People buy them but realize later they are more difficult to care for than they thought. Understand my question?
Where are the adult retics?

Quite a few, the keepers here all seem to be newer keepers like myself. For the most part we stick to one of two forums because were kinda like the herp nations rebel cousin, similar to the hot keepers. Also due to asinine legislation and the perception generally placed on us we don't always like people to know who/where we are.

Very good point. I never considered people not wanting attention to their snakes. Maybe being more public would help people be more tollerant of bigger snakes? I mean if people are hiding illegal snakes thats one thing (a major strain on our hobby) but if they are quiet about it because of image or stereotype then I would hope they reconsider it. Big snakes are great ,if you have the means to keep them . If you are reading this and have a big retic I hope you can post a few pics.

True. On another forum I'm on there's plenty of big animals...burms and retics mainly, with a few condas and afrocks thrown in....but that forum is also mainly geared towards the bigger animals....it's also a very small forum.

However, OTOH, there are alot of people who buy these large animals when they're hatchlings, and later want to get rid of them because the animal has gotten too big for them to handle in either size, food aggression...not being able to properly house them, etc.

These animals needs a....more a lack of a better word...dedicated keeper.....someone who has the knowledge and can give them the happy home and maintenance they require....and legally. I understand things happen to everyone that can cause someone to need to get rid of their bigger animals or their collection, but usually these keepers knew and had a good understanding of what was required of these animals and had the ability to give them that when purchased.

As much I want a retic, I absolutely refuse to get another big animal until I know I have the means THEN to give him the habitat he needs. I was going to be able to get one by now, but when we started moving, alot of things came up and are still continuing, so he'll have to wait. But that's ok because I know and understand what he's going to require and I want that before I go pick him out. I'm getting inpatient though lol

Anyway, there are some really big pretty retics out there. But like Kyle said, there's just not many on this forum.

Wow it's like you read my mind. I believe snakes are pets not items for trade and you keep pets until death. Buying a snake with ignorance or intent to rid of it when it gets big is no no as far as I am concerned .I can't help but wonder how many or how badly some snakes suffer because of this :(

Jenn_06

I don't think people are killing their big snakes, but it's hard to keep a snake that's 12ft + to stay still for a few minutes to get pics. My Isis is around 13ft and it's a big job to get her to stay still for some good pics and keep her from getting into everything. Snakes that big will do what it wants when it wants.

Yeah I think your temps may be a bit high... I try to keep the cool side 75-80 and the warm side 82-92 (depending on species). I think he will be ok with the warm side at 94, but the gradient should probably be larger so he can thermoregulate a bit better.

Oh, and he looks awesome ;)

Here is my new female Super Tiger 100% het Albino. I just got her in yesterday. I named her Fiona because my male super tiger was named Shrek and unfortunately Shrek had a very very small kink on is spine so I sent him back to the breeder because I already had a retic that was euthanized for problems with a kink and bone cancer. I am happy to say though at Shrek is going to a new home were the guy will see how he does as he grows with the kink. It was hard to see him go but I am pleased with the ending and I will be updated as he grows on how he does. Well here is his sister, she was the breeders only hold back and I was lucky enough to have her. She has a really interesting pattern and colors. I will post better pictures of her once she settles in a little more. I hope you enjoy. :)

For sure, the 18ft tiger we had out today at the expo was as tame as puppy, but did whatever it wanted and at its own pace and when they're that big you can't really control them, just guide them. Even at 8 feet they can be a handful, they're surprisingly fast.

The people that we need to convince that big snakes are ok in the right hands aren't on the forums. And the people that are on the forums simply need to meet a dwarf or SD at an expo to see what amazing animals they are and that not all of them get huge.
