View Full Version : Comparing Columbians

Here are two Epicrates cenchria maurus for comparison. Both are juveniles about the same age, yet they're clearly different. I expect Tagz (left) to darken into that wonderful deep Indian Red that most Columbians sport, and I expect Dusty (right) to get a little lighter, but only time will tell.

Only Tagz is permanent. Dusty was a drop-off and likely won't be staying.

Are they not Colombians?
I spelled the latin correctly, but you just want it *all*, don't ya :P
Yea, just poking. All in fun of course.

Very nice snakes. Just a helpful suggestion, I opened the thread expecting BCIs. Perhaps some specification would help:)

This is in the Epicrates section. It's not terribly likely that you'll find a BCI here, but you just might in the Boa Constrictor section

He has a point, though. If opened from the home page, there might be some confusion. I held a Columbian rainbow boa for the first time last week. (1 adult, 2 hatchlings) They seem to be wonderful snakes in a very "convenient" size.
It's in the proper section...

"comparing columbians" is catchy, and yes it is in the right section. This thread may be breaking hearts but let it roll...
Nice epicrates!

Me too, lol. I think she'll mature into exactly what I'm hoping for :)
There was another Rainbow boa that came at the same time as Dusty, but it's a Brazilian and as such I don't think it'd be fair to compare Colombians to it, but even if I did, they'd all be able to hold their own in a beauty contest, lol.

Each Rainbow Boa is beautiful in it's own way, be it Brazilian, Colombian, or Peruvian. Heck, i love em all!!!

Me too! But you forgot my favourite - Argentine. I really like how different they are, but they're so hard to find and at my age if one ever did cross my path, I probably won't have the strength to pick it-up, so I think you should get one so I can live vicariously through your images. Might as well grab an Angolan python for me too, OK? OK! Good talk :D

Yeah, but if you ever did UI usability studies, people read top/down and left to right. The lower right corner usually remains undiscovered. ;)

Get over it. I explained there were different subsections and I provided a graphic. If someone is too stupid to get it, I really don't care.

Here they are in the sun today, but the camera simply can't capture the iridescence you actually see in person - it captures perhaps 50% of what I see. Dusty on the left, Tagz on the right.

Both of them are truly stunning Todd, i will say, as a Brazilian Rainbow Boa owner, these guys equal, or even surpass my BRB, in looks....

I think they're a very under-rated snake and an excellent alternative to those wanting something that's all boa, yet not as large and legal almost everywhere, so I'm glad to see people are appreciating them :)
There's a Brazilian here too right now, but I haven't introduced him yet 'cause he needs a little more work and I'm not sure if he'll be staying or not yet.

Good looking CRBs Todd, what makes you think Dusty will get lighter rather than darker? If I seem to recall Tagz was already getting darker so it would make sense that he would continue to, but with only limited (to this point) experience with Dusty what makes you say that?

LOL. I knew you'd pipe-up there, Cliff, lol. I haven't introduced him because it hasn't eaten for me yet, it still needs some work and I don't know if he's staying - he's 1 of 3 snakes that were dropped off to be found new homes, so once the thing is up to par I'll either keep him and introduce him, or I'll start scouting within my network for a new foster home for it. It'd be unfair to taunt you all with that Brazilian until then, but I *do* reserve the right to taunt if I decide to keep it :D
As much as I think the Colombians are a good-looking pair, I'm not 100% sure of their sexes and I don't think Dusty is staying even if it's the opposite sex to Tagz. This last group of take-ins kinda shows me that people are giving Rainbow boas away in this area - 3 of the 4 that are here came to me for nothing and the 1 that I did pay for (Tagz) cost me all of $12.50, so I seriously doubt that I'd want to produce a bunch of baby Rainbow boas even once. They simply aren't in demand in my area :(

Awww -- that makes me sad.
Maybe if you teach them to play hockey? ;-)
Jokes aside, you're a great keeper, and I'm sure will find your new arrivals great homes.

Ha! One hockey fan in the house is pull-ENTY, thank you VERY much, lol.
You can be sure they'll only go to keepers who have proven themselves :)

Both Colombians shed overnight. These are unrelated snakes and it's just a fluke that they're they're the same size and age, as Dusty was a recent drop-off.
Tagz is the darker, more patterned individual, Dusty is lighter w/reduced pattern.

Nope, not at all. Since there is such little interest in Rainbow boas in my area that people keep giving them to me (Dusty is the 3rd that's come to me and the one that I did buy for myself cost me a whopping $12.50), I've found a home for Dusty within my own little Network and he'll be going there before the two get into any funny business and end up producing a bunch of unwanted offspring. I'd love to keep Dusty around, but without any interest in the area, it just doesn't warrant the possibility of little ones and I don't know enough dedicated keepers outside my area to even think about it :(

I salute you being a responsible. Of course, the only real solution is to get more keepers interested in rainbows! ;-)

Oh thank goodness you came up with an alternate solution - I was afraid the only solution was for one of us to get 'fixed' and I was afraid it'd have to be me for some reason. I have so much luck that it runs backwards, so I could see that in my near future, but I'm glad I no longer have to do that :D

Good on you making the responsible decision, Dusty is a very handsome crb and I'm sure he'll make his new owner very happy. I really like his reduced pattern.
