i was checking craigslist for used cages and saw this guy for trade for a Ipod touch so i called as i happend to have a 3rd gen i didn't use. When i got there the owner (14 yr old kid ) said it was super aggressive and not eating for last 4 months and but had been feeding it live rats in the past . Was in a 20 gallon tank screen top, dirty water , nasty aspen , 4 x5 UTH with no thermstat and one half log hide with no branches . Kid got it as a present from some family member last summer with all the stuff set up he said and it was about 18 inches or so . The mom wanted it gone .

No other info at all about breed or CBB or year or anything except its a male . i think whoever the family member was just dropped off a snake they didn't want on the kid and he was afraid of it so didn't mess with it much. It's about 3 feet , did not weight it yet. i was able to pick him up and put him in a cloth bag with a few strikes but no bites ,gave the kid the ipod and left . At home I looked him over good and he was sorta calm then put him in a 105 qrt tub with all the correct temps and water etc , he drank alot right away , and ducked into a hide for several hours . normally i would let him be for a week or so then try to feed, but i was feeding other snakes and decided to try to offer him a rat and if he didn't take it then I'd give it to my hog island . Well he took it ! hit it good and hard and gone in 5 minutes then back to the hide . Now i will leave him alone for the week.

So any guess what it is ? i'm guessing Diamond Jungle Jag? hoping its not a coastal as i can't deal with that kind of size.

but from what ive heard from more experienced carpet keeps is you cant be for sure unless knowing the lineages

How big might this male get then? I know its just a guess but thats ok. I'm not familiar enough with carpets yet.

Looks like he's got alot of Coastal in him. Coastal males can get to 7-8 feet.

Looks like a mainly coastal mix. Don't be worried about size. By the time he gets 7 ft you will be used to it. We have a 7'+ female and she is no trouble. You will be fine.

Carpets are slim snakes for their size, you could get away with a 4' X 2'. Give him stuff to climb and a couple hides, you'll be fine. By all means, it's NOT a "giant"...

I was thinking diamond/coastal cross, maybe diamond/jungle, definitely don't see any pure locality. Definitely not pure diamond. Since its a male (I would sex it or have it sexed to be sure so you don't have a surprise should you end up with an 8 foot female coastal cross) it shouldn't get too big on you anyways. Even coastal males don't get too large, and because their more slender bodied than even most retics you shouldn't have a problem if it does hit 7 feet for some reason.

one of my buddies came over who has a much larger collection than me but no carpets and he begged me to have him so he took him home , he was terribly aggressive when we put him in a tub to take home but likley due to stress. He also left with the baby IJ I just got as his wife wanted to work with her as she was not eating for me and so small. I'm just going to stick with my BRB and Hog island , pythons are not for me yet.

Don't be discouraged, I've found that with Carpets you need to be really selective when buying. You have to be aware of what all the localities look like first of all, and know that some Carpets don't tame out well. MOST of them eat well, but definitely not all of them.

I always handle & ask the breeder a lot of questions before buying a Carpet & I have a decent eye for locality. Better luck with the next one, with this experience you'll be a lot more prepared...

No way to tell for sure. Definitely looks like some sort of intergrade but it is impossible to tell exactly what mix from looks alone. One thing for sure, it's not a jag as you brought up that suggestion in your first post. And as for size, most carpet pythons stay fairly manageable, but there are monsters in any of the subspecies. Having some or all coastal blood does not guarantee a monster snake, so fear not.

Werd, just cuz retics CAN reach 20+ ft doesn't mean they all do, its a rare female that hits that. All species are like that.
