Steve made a burrow the other day and is spending almost all the time in it. He has had crickets in his enclosure so he is eating and I see him every once in a while but usually he will go into his burrow if he hears anything.
Tried luring him out with a pinky and he poked his nose out went back in and it slipped out of the tongs and in that instant he grabbed it and pulled it back in.
I was just wondering if it is normal for them to be in burrows for most the day.

Yes it is, They are like reptilian gophers.
They feel safe and secure in burrows.

Okay thank you. He came out to get a pinky today and he is basking now. he seems to be less timid after eating.

This is why I am glad I got two lizards at once.
The smaller (presumably female) is bashful and only comes out to eat and bask, The larger one will trot right up to the glass at the first sight of a person in the room.
When they chase each other around, the burrows are part of their "game"

That is cool. Would it be too late to introduce another monitor of the same age in about 2 months? They would each be about 4 to 5 months old.
I would have earlier but a 4x2x2 wouldn't work for 2 medium sized savs at once.

I will be honest, I don't think 8x4x4 is going to work for me for long.
But I can't really answer that, I put mine together right away, they were newborns at the time.
Also if fighting is going to worry you, don't do it.
It's all I can do to not break up the fights. They are not hurting each other, it's more of an "alpha" pissing match.
They bully each other daily.

Alright, I will have a 2 car garage. Would you think a 10x5x4 or a 12x5x4 work well?

12x6x4
when working with plywood, those are easy dimensions to work with.
one and a half sheets long is 12 feet. (8 feet plus 4 feet)
one and a half sheets deep is 6 feet. (Half sheet cuth lengthwise to provide 2 sheet each 8 feet long and 2 feet wide.)
one half sheet tall is 4 feet.
Minimal cutting, minimal waste. (no scrap lumber leftover)

Sounds like that will be what I will be building. Thank you
