I have a reptile license for my diamond python, but I just read up that in NSW there are certain reptiles that you don't need a license for as long as it was purchased from a licensed reptile keeper and a diamond/ carpet python is one of them, is that true?

Absolutely NOT
There are species that are off license... having said that if a species does not appear on the schedule list it means it can't be legally kept. I'm Victorian so I'm only familiar with the Vic system, I suggest getting clarification of off license species from the NPWS but any python in NSW is definitely a licensed scheduled animal.
