View Full Version : Rumbling noises?

Sometimes when I pick up Luigi his stomach/digestive tract makes those rumbling noises like our stomachs do. Is this gas build up? Or digesting noises? Do I have something to worry about?
He hasn't pooped for me yet, but he did pee. I've noticed that he makes those noises every since I got him 2ish weeks ago. He ate a large rat last weekend. His basking spot is around 90-93 degrees.

He's probably just digesting...

How soon after feeding are you handling him?

I hope so. That's what I thought but didn't want to just assume. :)

He's being doing the entire time I had him. But I gave him a week to digest when I first picked him up for a sec to fix something in his cage. But I didn't actually handle him till today and that's about week and half after he ate

Also my big female JCP let out about a quart of pee in my livingroom post gurgle once too.
So for us that sound equals run!!

Sympathetic response shunts digestion.

Post a recent pic of him! Let's see the "lump" he may still be digesting, or he could be backed up a little...more than likely he's got a nice "lump" near his vent, and will give you the gift of poo any day now : )

Fortunately it's a boid, so those 'gifts' won't be all that often. If it were a colubrid, it'd be the gift that keeps on giving :)

Yes, my Grey Banded King just loves to keep sharing his deposits with me. And it is always guaranteed he will leave one after he sheds as well, which he did today:D

My king is the most regular of all my animals. lol And boids may not go that often, but mine leave deposits so large, I sometimes wonder if it's normal. lol

True story... Penelope (Milksnake) starts pooping on day 3 after eating, and it's usually a good idea to not handle her till day 5 because she does not mind pooping or peeing on me or in my bed haha
Jaleely, there is no lump that I see :/
Stand clear, sounds like he's going to explode!!!

And the vet visit is due to drool?
Was it constant? What's it's consistency? Any other symptoms? Is your heating element and/or thermometer faulty?

Trollbie, did you pick him up when he just drank some water? That has happened to me before, hence the "drool".

It was a lot of drool at once. It like poured of his mouth. It was very runny and clear. It could have just been water mixed with saliva, considering how much came out of him at once and it didn't smell. I checked the inside of his mouth as much as he'd let me, but nothing seemed unusual from what I saw. He doesn't have any mucus or drool or anything around his nose or mouth.
But he does make kind of gaspy breathing sounds sometimes. I haven't heard him make them when he's inside his tub, so at first I thought maybe I put too much pressure on his lung when I picked him up. They're not consistent, and he doesn't wheeze or click.
I'm trying to bump up his temps, and I'll check on him tonight. But at this point I think I'm better safe than sorry?

I'm not sure. He was chilling in his usual spot when I picked him up. But it's entirely possible. But since he's making those gaspy breathing noises sometimes too, I think it's better to have him looked at :/

Make sure it's a reptile vet. Have them do a bacteria swab, etc. If it's a good vet they'll cover everything.
I hope it's nothing! Probably a good idea to get him checked though. Can't hurt anything but your pocketbook, and at least that pays for piece of mind. As long as it's a reliable vet and you can trust the results!! Good luck!

It's the Avian & Exotic Clinic of the Monterey Peninsula. I've heard nothing but great things about them and they seem to even be cheaper than other places around here. It may hurt my wallet, but he's worth it even if it's nothing :)

Personally, I think it's the water issue. It happens.
Secondly, if the gaspy breathing sounds more like a long exhalation it could be just that. It's not quite a hiss but it's just a snake exhaling loudly from pressure on the lungs possibly or just a loud exhale.
Lastly, if you take him to the vet do NOT let them give him any drugs without a proper culture done. You don't want to put a snake through medication if they don't need it. It can really screw with them.

I hope it's nothing, but he's starting to make those breathing sounds more often. It kind of sounds like a sick baby. I don't know how else to describe it. I dont want to wait and then have him get worse. I will make sure they do proper testing. Is that something that comes back right away? Or will I have to wait a couple days for results

Cultures can take up to 72 hours to come back. I know there are some "quick" cultures, but they aren't accurate enough to trust, in my opinion.

They said that there's nothing wrong that they can see other than some small hemorrhages in his mouth. They told me to keep an eye on those and if they don't heal and/or he starts getting snot and such, then I'm gonna bring him back for a blood test or culture.
And for putting him through the vet visit, he left me a nice big stinky pile last night lol
