As far as "common/mainstream" snakes go, I've always enjoyed Lampropeltis getula sp., especially the eastern species.

One of my first was a WC speckled king that a friend caught and left at my doorstep. That was one of the most docile kingsnakes I ever had. Kept it for a few years before giving it away. That was about 15 yrs ago. And about 3-4 yrs ago, the guy I gave it to told me that it finally died, presumably of old age.

Another was an eastern black kingsnake that escaped a couple times.

Over a decade later, I finally got into the eastern chain kings.

This is "Donut" a mosaic x tiger phase (so I was told) chain king. He was as tame as he was huge. I recently had to give him up due to space, but the friend who keeps him now occasionally allows me to borrow him for educational talks and stuff, so I get to see him from time to time.

and this was "Obsidian" a Mexican black king I picked up as a steal at my LPS. These photos were taken seconds before he decided to bite the fire out of my hand. It took a gush of hot water from the sink to get him off. Probably about as close as I'll ever get to owning an indigo!

I don't own any, although I'd like to, but I love the look of logs and their variety

I only own one king, and it is technically not even mine, but I would agree that the entertainment factor is just great with this type of snake. They are gorgeous to look at, and in contrast to other snakes they seem to react to humans quite a bit. I often don't know if I'm watching the snake or the snake is watching me. Some people however don't seem to like how active they are.

Beautiful snakes - Just LOVE Kings! Great shots, seeing as they rarely stay still long enough to get a good shot!

I wouldve never chosen to get one, but have a Cali as a rescue from a woman who couldnt take care of it. I have to admit they are really fun snakes to own. Very inquisitive and active, and ALWAYS hungry.

By the way, those are both beautiful snakes.

Those are really cool. I like the partial aberrant pattern on the eastern.

Yeah Ross, that caught my eye as well! I like the bulls eye circle too.

That's how he got the name "Donut" (from the previous owner).

Yeah, it reminds me of that one in Hubbs book with several bulls eye's in a row.

Has your friend tried breeding it yet?
