It's about time we had a thread about jaguar sibling carpet pythons. There's a fair amount of debate about what kind of genetics these guys can carry. The jaguar gene itself is a co-dominant trait that is homozygous lethal. Therefore all the jags that are in the market are heterozygous for the trait and one would think siblings would be simply normal carpets. I have heard a bit about clutches from jaguar siblings having aberrant patterns or more frequent recurrence of the jaguar trait later on down bloodlines. I don't know if anyone has done any actual studies on this?

I have one jaguar sibling. He is 75% jungle and 25% coastal. His brother and clutchmate is Jigsaw, a famous aberrant jaguar from Mike Curtin of Scattershot Exotics. Mike and I are discussing a possible breeding loan to see what kind of interesting patterns my boy might carry. Mike's shown that some of the aberrancy is carried in the siblings- if they are later bred to a different jag, unusual patterns pop up.

I figured this thread would be a good place for us all to discuss jaguar siblings and our thoughts on them.

Sorry, forgot to include this picture...it's the closest to Volt's actual colors. He is really really yellow, but the flash on cameras often washes him out a bit. This one was taken the day after a shed, so he's really glowing. :) I love this boy!!

Imo they're the "mutts" of the carpet world :)

Some of them look better than others. I don't breed my snakies, so I can't really comment genetics wise.

Personally I like sibs better then most jags :D They are definitely nicer then an integrade made without using the jag gene, IE a normal coastal. Volt is a crazy good looking snake regardless of the breeding potential, and personally I think should be worth more then most jags I see. I've always loved Mikes Ocelot jags, but none of them compare to Volt!

I love the ocelot jags and a pic of them on this site drove me to picking up my little jag.
I love the sibs to. My labrododdle is a mutt , super smart and cute as can be. Sometimes the mutts are the best.

The Jag gene affects the pattern on Morelias... the more distinguished/aberrant the polygenic appearance is to begin with, the more drastic the effect of the JAG gene.

The main reason why every sub-species of Morelia spilota is "Jagged" these days... The lucky dip on the pattern. Here in the land of Morelias, there are some absolutely gob-smacking snakes being produce due to the abundance of genetic diversity. I am particularly fond of the Julatten JAGs, stunning crisp white snakes with JAG patterns.

There's a breeder here who is also working on adding the JAG gene to "tiger" jungles.... should be an interesting project.

Another one are caramel coastals and hypo bredlis that are now being used in JAG projects.

I love Mike's Ocelot jags too! They're awesome!! I miss having a jag, and I'd like to own one again someday, but I would have to find one that didn't have much, if any, noticeable neuro issues.

Thank you for posting your sib pic! I've put ALOT of thought into picking up some high end siblings I've seen here and there, but you never really see people flailing around pictures of their "mutts" all grown up....so I never really get to see what any of the high end sibs turn out to be. :(

Could be a commentary right there on how they turn out to be.... Great as hatchies and a few stunning as adults but what about the rest of the "high end hatchie sibs"?

I'm all for pure locality lineage and keeping bloodlines pure; however, I do think that some of the mixed-breed carpet pythons are amazing. High-% diamond/jungle crosses have got to be some of the most beautiful carpet pythons IMO, and I'm still shocked at the clarity and brightness of pattern Volt has compared to a lot of pure jungles I see going for way more money.
