I am going to be building a new cage for my 7 year old Red Tail. I just realized that I have a big glass tank in the garage that I wanted to use temporarily when I move until the new cage is built. It is the long shorter tank, as opposed to the taller type.
My question is this. I will use a light on one side and the CHE on the other to maintain the proper temps. The cover it has, is that mesh material, which can not hold heat nor humidity at all. Does anyone know of something I could replace it with? Something that will hold the heat and humidity in the tank?
Appreciate the help!
Get a piece of plexi glass cut it to size and silicone it to the bottom of the screen lid, Make sure you cout a big enough area to let the heat from the light go threw. If not it will melt the acrylic. Drill some holes for ventalation aswell.
This is what I did for my My BRB and it works great. The cage is at a steady 88% humidity and 83 degress on the cool side, and on the warm side the humidity gets no lower than 70% humidity and 88 degress max temp.
When the humidity drops under 70% on the warm side I mist the inside till I see the humid gauge reads 95% then it will be ok for half the day. But usually the humidity on the cool side stays at proper levels.

I put my water bowl on the hot side of the tank. I have a humidity box on the other side. I mist the cage every other day before I head to work. I also cover about 2/3 of the lid with a towel. I only do this in the fall/winter months because where I live the humidity is pretty stifling in the summer.

Went out to the store today. Bought a nice piece of MDF board. Sealed it and cut it to size. Also cut two holes out and used wire fencing over them to place one CHE and one Light. Came out great!
Also bought Eco-Earth for the substrate, and a nice big waterbowl. I am waiting 24 hours for the sealant to dry and stop smelling. Can't wait to put her in her new enclosure!!

She's in the new cage :) Well temporary/new cage LOL
I apologize for the pics. The glass was dirty from the Eco-Earth and she is about to shed, hence the milky eyes :)
