How old is he?
Are they supposed to be that wide around the middle? :hmm:

With the exception of the really fast or arboreal species, most monitors are a little round in the middle.

He's 2, when I got him he was a year and very small, around 14". He's puffed up in the pic
He's really cool, I didn't think I liked Black throats that much until these pictures, he's beastly!

how is it that all these black throats i see have their patterns very pronounced.... mine is constantly digging in his dirt and in his hides and burrows, so the only time i get to see his patterns is when he sheds (he's clean for all of 5 minutes) or if i trick him into a shower or bath lol. could it be the dirt i use or should these guys not be kept on so much substrate as say a Sav?
I'm just concerned that maybe i'm missing something, (and well I'd really like to be able to see his pattern all the time)
Miket T,if you have dirt you will have a dirty animal, mine are the same way. Most monitors spend as much time underground as above, from what i've heard.
This is from a thread sometime ago, that shows how funny people are.Since studies of them are from their foraging aspects,a percentage of their lifetime, their underground habits are greatly misunderstood because it's something we don't see.Out of mind out of touch-their are some species associated with 'arboreal' that spend times undeground if given the chance.

My monitors are always covered in dirt.
they dig and burrow and root around all day.

I took the pics after coming home from an outing with him, he's normally dirty but the neighbourhood kids and the hose fixed that lol
