This one has taken to hanging out under a couple boards in the backyard. I'd say it is about three feet long, certainly over two, and about as large around as a C battery cell at the fattest.

This is in Berkeley, CA.

I'm worried about my dogs using the back yard with the snake, though I doubt I need to, one of my dogs got suddenly sick yesterday and they can't figure out why. Today my girlfriend was gardening and found the snake right where that dog likes to hang out. The snake has stayed, moving between a few different spots. I only bothered it long enough to take a few photos.

I'm concerned it might be a lost pet since the coloring looks odd (to my very uninformed eyes). If so, I'll put up a flyer and get it home.

If I need not worry about either I'll let it stay and eat the rats around here. It seems quite passive, not aggressive.

Thank you!

It's definitely a corn snake. Probably an escaped pet since it's not the "wild-type" coloring. It looks like an amelanistic (aka albino) corn to me.

Yep, it's a corn snake, it looks like an amelanistic corn.. I'm kind of concerned because I don't think you'd see those very often in the wild, it could be a released/escaped pet.. maybe..

I'd say it was a released pet. Poor thing.
Would't have made the dog sick though, so no worries there! : )

Harmless Corn Snake.
Thank you. I looked at www.californiaherps.com (http://www.californiaherps.com/) to check by range prior to asking here and didn't see it. It looks very like the photos I found online for corn snakes, other than the eyes, which are also that same bright color instead of black - which is what made me think something along the lines of albinism.

It will have happy hunting out there - neighbors have lots of ivy with rats.

Wouldn't it get picked up by some kind of predator pretty easy because of its bright coloring? Personally I'd keep it.

Keep it or rehome it. Either way, it's a harmless corn snake :)

Probably wont last long outside as its an albino... Either try and find the owners, or foster it yourself :D

If you contacted our local Herpetology Society you could probably get someone to come out and catch it and find it a good home. This kind of snake won't last long because of it coloring it makes it hard to hide. I would guess some turn it lose or it escaped. It safe to say this was some one pet.

Corns are not native to California.
