Hey everyone! Been on forums for many years, this is my first time joining this one! Glad to be here.

Colombian Red Tail Boa

I am looking to create a hiding enclosure that better suits my Boa and is heated as well. I wanted to make a box framed with 2x4's. Then on top of the 2x4's, I wanted to place a cork board with a heat pad on top. This will allow the heat to travel through the holes into the enclosure. I then want to place a sheet of glass on top of the heating pad to allow for the snake to sit on top as well.

Here is my question. Is there a heat pad, or tape that someone can recommend that will provide sufficient heat, but that will provide the heat to the surrounding air as opposed to just the surface it is sitting on? I need the heat to emit down into the enclosure through the cork board.

I appreciate the help!!

Here is a pic of my girl :)

That a tough one. I am sure someone should be able to answer this for you.

Well my only issue is that heat rises. I am thinking of incorporating it on the bottom of the enclosure, with the cork board. I just want to make her hiding spot nice and toasty

So, you want the heat to originate from the top of the enclosure and warm the area directly beneath it? Did I get that right? The way it was written was slightly confusing.

I'm no expert on building enclosures. Just wanted to say that is a stunning photo. ^_^

I was slightly confused myself. If this is what Flaco21 means a Radiated Heat Panel (RHP) would work perfect. Here's a site that RBI Radiant Heat Panels (http://www.reptilebasics.com/rbi-radiant-heat-panels) sells them.

Don't know how that is confusing, but it is what it is.

Thank you very much!! I have a few more that look just as stunning :)

That may be it! That looks very interesting. I need to read more about 'em and possibly give it a shot.

Another question.

I have another cage I am in the process of building right now. I am going to use a Ceramic Bulb as the heat source. Is there a specific thermostat that is recommended for these? I have heard great reviews from people using this: Amazon.com: Hydrofarm MTPRTC Digital Thermostat For Heat Mats: Patio, Lawn & Garden (http://www.amazon.com/Hydrofarm-MTPRTC-Digital-Thermostat-Heat/dp/B000NZZG3S)

Will that work with the bulb even though it states it is for a heat pad?

hello and welcome

imo,the best way to achieve good consistant ambient air temperature is with non light emmiting ceramic bulbs

if you wanted the hide to be hot, then sit it near the heat source

i personally would NOT put glass on top of a heat mat, etc, because glass can heat up and may lead to burns

i had a snake trail itself through it's water bowl, then move the substrate,so it was sitting on the bottom of a plastic faunarium, directly above the heat source.this caused the water on the snakes body to heat,to the point it got burned

i think glass would have the same effect (not being cheeky mate, just trying to avoid, what happened to one of my snakes)

cheers shaun:)

i would use a dimming stat or a pulse stat

when i've used on off stats,i found that you don't get as long out the ceramic bulb, they tend to blow

i use microclimate dimming thermostats and microclimate pulse thermostats with all my pythons

i preffer to use thermostats specifically designed for reptiles mate

cheers shaun

^^ Awesome. Where do you recommend placing the probe? I will be hanging the Ceramic Bulb from the top with the guard around it.

I also use pulse stats for my 7 CHE's and i place the probe directly under the light - usually i will put small water bowl onto the wire (not the actual probe) to hold the probe in place as the snakes do like moving them around ;)
