View Full Version : The laboratory... *evil laugh*
Well, here's the first ever snake house we had - it was going to be a fishtank, but my nephew's cornsnake convinced us to have a snake instead.
Little did we know what an addiction he had introduced us to!!! (LOL)!
Ah well, I hope you like it...:D
Actually, I just hope it works...

It looks very nice!:)
What are you doing heat wise? Are you able to give ths snake some "under tank heat"?
Wow, i love it. It looks great
Hmmmm. Well it was rather complicated to rig up! (It was SUPPOSED to be the easy option over a fishtank - ha!).
Where you can see the wood chips in the bottom of the globe is underneath a 'false floor', which only has a thin (normal) layer of substrate on top.
The false floor sandwiches a heat mat covering about one third the floor area, cable coming out of one of the appertures around the back.
Only problem was - you have to have a floor which will fit through the largest opening (the one at the front)!
We finished up (after much scratching of head) with two pieces of vinyl material (like the imitation leather on car seats) with the heat mat in between, and then sealant all round the edge so that the thing can be flooded and cleaned properly.
Having said that, cleaning is a pain, because my arms aren't long enough, and everything has to be done one-handed!
The other thing which maybe looks odd is the steel mesh, which is a bit harsh, but it's lined with a soft plastic mesh to prevent nose-rubs.
Generally, it keeps a really good temp gradient, and apart from the 'maintenance', works really well.
Not good for the space-saving needs though...!
cheers,
Brig.

I think that is great. Like you said though...the cleaning would be a pain as well as the initial set up. The mesh looks a little out of place but I still think it's cool.
Nice job.
I like that original cage! Great!
Marisa
P.S. Like the person above mentioned maybe instead of wire/screen some black/white nylon could fit perfectly over the holes with some rubberbands and would be sturdy enough I would think ? Just an idea.

A snake habitrail. Get like twenty of them and interlock them all around your room it would be really fun. Otherwise it is very interesting and unique congratulations.

Very nice!! A fascinating and original design. Never imagine a snake cage is not a square or rectangular one. Keep up you good work!!

That would be really cool, I've considered getting the ferret version of the habitrail maze (bigger version) but i wouldn't want to have to dismantle the thing to get the snake out.

There's a funny thing... I'd completely forgotten this, but our first two snakes were cornsnake hatchlings, tiny things! Everyone said they were great escapologists, and would be quite strong at pushing lids off!!! I don't know quite how big we THOUGHT they were going to get, but that enclosure is like Alcatraz! And if they got big enough to push that lot off - THEY WOULDN'T FIT IN THE ENCLOSURE, would they?!!! Duh! Live and learn.
I think it might be time for an appropriate modification - I like the nylon idea, Marissa.
And the other thing...

I've got several other pieces of glassware which we wanted to link up, but...

That's exactly why we never got round to it! Feeding's not so bad, as long as you can entice them out with the smell of dinner, but CLEANING DAY - aarghh! :(
Well, if we ever do, I'll be sure to post a pic.
:D cheers,
Brig.
