Tagging snakes.

Since I see such mass quantities of wild snakes, alive and dead, I was wondering if there is any way to tag them that would not hurt them. Besides something like microchips, is there anything? I'd like to be able to keep tabs and see the same snakes year after year and see their growth rates and such.

You could just tell them to stay around your house and check in couple times a year :p

I've radio tagged snakes. But that's very costly and not practical for what your doing.

Clipping sub-caudal scales is really pretty easy and mostly reliable. Most of your snakes should have a row of double sub caudal scales. Use a sharp pair of scissor, scapel blade or single edged razor blade and simple excise one or more scales. I usually start with 0-2 (this is looking at them upside down), meaning no scale on the snakes right side (left as you look at it) was clipped and the 2nd subcaudal on right (looking at it) was taken out. The next one would be 0-3........eventually taking 2-2, 2-3, 2-4 ect.
