View Full Version : Photos of my first Carpet
Female Coastal Jag Yearling from Jeff Favelle. Having zero experience with these animals before now, I was expecting a 2.5-3 foot snake, but she measures out at around 5 feet right now. You can tell she's ready to shed right now. I can't wait to see her colors in fresh skin!
Still trying to settle on a name. I will be needing a new viv very soon as what I set up was a 36"x18"x18". She's not crammed in there or anything but at 5 feet she's a bit big for it.

She's got tons of room in there as long as you let her out often, but Carpets do like to soak from time to time, so you may want to upgrade the water basin. Smal rubbermaid type tubs work well for that :)

i was thinking the same mate
unless she's going to be a huge example of an adult pure coastal
either way its a very nice looking jag :)
Jeff Favelle, imo would not get his hatch dates mixed up,as he definatly knows his stuff

That's beautiful, especially for a first carpet. You obviously did your research. http://www.lilwaynehq.com/forums/images/smilies/thumbs.gif
Thanks guys - I'm very happy with her. I will do something with her water container, though she hasn't shown the slightest interest in what's there as it is.
5 feet seemed big to me too but like I said what do I know? :p. Jeff's comments to me when we were discussing the sale all along have been that she's quite a large specimen. I'm guessing "Yearling" could be 18 months - I don't know. I sent him an email asking for a hatch date.
Just waiting for her to finish her shed before I feed her for the first time - I hope it's fairly soon as I'd like to establish a saturday feeding schedule, and I'm anxious to get her eating!

i'd guess your jags closer to 2 years old mate

That is normal for a favelle carpet, he selectively breeds for size and food response, not just colour. My Jungle hit 5 feet in the first year, and she has no coastal. 2 years old and 7 feet now, pushing 8 and turning 3 this year. Favelle is the way to go, ever wonder why the gamma line snakes are soo big?? Same thing hehe. Very nice coastal jag, the bigger the better when it comes to carpet pythons!!

Yeah I would be surprised if he had sold me a 2 year old animal as a yearling. He showed me photos of a few 'yearlings', one actually larger than this one. He said he'd check his records and send me her DOB later tonight. It doesn't matter a lot to me really, though I guess if she's only 1 year instead of two it's more likely that she will brighten up some more with time. We shall see!

sorry mate i should have been clearer with my post
i should have said,at that size most hatchlings would be around 2 years old
i did not mean to imply a 2 year old was sold as a yearling

If I was the OP and got a snake this big as a yearling I would have called and asked as well. Nice carpet. Nice size.

Yeah like I said I've asked for the hatch Date. He doesn't always respond immediately though so it might be a day or two.

I'm not being cheeky here or having a go at you... just want to say that 8 foot for a three year old jungle? I would be asking about the "purity" of the line, there is no known jungles out there that are that size in the wild, even the ones in the tablelands. I understand that the breeder is breeding for an increased size but unless he has been breeding for 40 years or so and these huge jungles are the result of a 10th gen selective breeding, there is no possibility and a Morelia spilota cheynei would be nudging 8 foot at three years old.
I have no question on purity, Noelle was sold to me by Jeff Favelle himself. He has been breeding carpets for many years, though I couldn't exactly say how many. I can say that Noelle hit 5 foot at age 1, is approaching 7 right now just after year 2, and I can assume by this time next year, she can pass 7 and approach 8, possibly hit it by age 4. 3 years old may be a stretch, but I wouldn't doubt 4. She is a very big girl, grew much faster then my male 50%coastal jag sib and my female neon jaguar(who still doesn't eat very well so she's not much of a comparison...)
Still my 50% coastal 25%jungle 25%diamond male is almost 6 feet long at age 2 and my female jungle is much larger then he is. so as unbelievable as it may seem, I have to trust the line as the breeder is the best we have in Canada, and not only that, but I have no reason to suspect otherwise, as I have seen pure coastals and she looks nothing like a coastal if you ask me. She's just a big girl :D You want to see some amazingly fast growing carpets, talk to John Battaglia at Morelia Trophy Club. His Gamma line snakes also grow incredibly quick for a carpet python, he may have some more insight for you as well.
I just got home and walked in just in time to see her rubbing on the substrate and yawning crazy wide. Looks like the shed has begun so there will be more pics soon!

Even if this wasnt your first Carpet, its still amazing looking by any standard, but the fact that its the first? All I have to say is "Wow!"
OK so I spologise if this is a massive pic dump, I was fairly excited to see her new skin last night so I took quite a few.

So since she's shed, I fed her the first rat I've ever fed her. Today she is cruising around and hanging out in her tree, with only a minor bulge evident. I'm wondering if I should be moving her up a rat size - I see some debate about it but the consensus seems that carpets can take prey up to 2x their diameter without an issue. These small rats I'm feeding her are about the same diameter as she is.

Carpets can take up to FOUR times their girth without issue. My jungle eats same size as my SD retic and has no problems at all with the size of the rats.
So what do you think, feed her two next time then? I've already got a bunch of 50-100g "small" rats. I'm new at this but it seems like one of those a week might be on the light side for her.
I'd give her two, or three if you felt like it. I would be feeding that snake 2 mediums if it was over here.

How do you measure her? She's big for a yearling for sure but I don't think she quite looks 5 feet.
She looks amazing.
I measure using the cage dimensions when they sprawl out while shedding.
I measured using this app here: Serpwidgets - Snake Measurer (http://www.serpwidgets.com/main/measure)
with this photo: http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k281/vermeuliscious/Carpet%20Python/small_P1020361.jpg
The ruler on the floor next to her is 1 foot. I was skeptical of the app so I used some calipers on my screen for a rough verification and it seems to be in the ball park.
I'll save you the time :p

Did you get the hatch date?
Not yet. I'm bad for asking 15 questions in each email so I think he forgot. I just asked again.
Still no hatch date, just sent another email. Fed her 2x ~75g rats tonight and she took them no problem. Still carefully sniffing around the cage looking for another one. I don't think I'd feed her three though... she's got a pretty good bulge going on. I think maybe the first one I fed her was on the smaller end of the range.

Takes a while for carpets to switch off from feed mode... Mine stay in feed mode for at least a couple of days after feeding lol.
Just make sure she has a nice buldge (which sounds like it) and don't worry if she still looks hungry, it's a carpet thing.

Totally agree - my carpet takes XXL rats and immediately looks for another one even tho he can barely lift himself onto his perch ;)
Great looking carpet. After a 3 month hunger strike when I first got him my JCP has adopted the typical carpet attitude with regards to food: MORE!
He goes into feed mode a day or two before feeding day and stays for a couple days after. I have to be really careful opening his tub up because he'll strike at the first warm thing he sees.

How often do you feed him? (not implying you aren't doing it right, I just want to know for myself and Spot)
Hatch Date October 10th, 2010, so she's a little over a year and a half. Makes a bit more sense. I'm only slightly disappointed (I was liking the idea of her prodigious size!).
WRT feeding, I guess I've read a lot of generalities that do not necessarily apply to carpets; I expected her to eat and then go curl up in a warm spot for a few days, but instead she prefers to eat and then perch up at the top of her climbing tree.
Her feed response isn't crazy but maybe she just hasn't had time to settle into a routine yet. She was definitely looking for more food, but I reached in to change her water and she eyed me but no striking. I also reached in with the tongs to help her with the first rat.. I'm assuming this isn't recommended practice, but she had managed to bury the head under a coil and had spent 10-15 minutes sniffing the rat all over looking for the head to start eating it :unhappy:. I just reached in and gave the rat a tug with the tongs to get it's head exposed. She jumped and hissed at me but promptly went back to eating (and found the head this time).

I feed a large prey item to all my snakes on a 14/21 day schedule and he also gets any left overs from any of the others that miss a feed.
Well, she has shed a second time (exactly 3 weeks after the first shed, and 1 month since I got her). In the month I've had her, serpwidgets snake measurer says she's grown 3.5" (!)

she's looking good mate
imo she will colour up to be a very good looking jag
if that's a mouse your feeding her,i would change her over to rats,as once they get older it can be difficult,to cross them over from mice to rats
it takes a lot of mice to feed an adult carpet,so i feed them rats straight from the egg
i look forward to updates as she colours up
cheers shaun

Thanks Shaun, she's on small rats right now. I was fortunate enough to get her from the breeder already eating rats so I didn't have to have that particular battle of wits!
I don't think Jeff even has mice in his freezer :D Just kidding of course, but that amount of growth is just awesome, and exceptional even for a Favelle line snake, so major kudos! Sure makes the 5 feet in a year sound less far-fetched now eh?

re mice
the ONLY time i feed mice is with diamond pythons, from the egg to 1 year old i give them mice.....
diamonds grow at such a slow rate, that they would be on rat pups for a fair length of time, imo rat pups don't have a lot of nourishment in them,so i go from small mice,to medium mice, then after a year rat fuzzies (with fur)
so when i have no young diamonds,i have no mice in the freezer, all other carpets i give rats straight from the egg
cheers shaun
