so i gave in today and got one of the baby normals at the pet store.i know i said i didnt want a normal but i am saving it lol pet store is horrible for any animal. ido plan on still getting my different maybe male maybe female now it doesnt matter now what sex.

my question is i got a heating pad for under tank and her tnaks going tobe smaller bout 2 ft long 1 ft wide 2 ft high give or take. plenty of room for ehr for a while. but myproblem is if i put a red heating bulb on top it heats the whole tank so whe will have no cool side and no hot side.

so can i just use pad with no light as my rooms pretty warm anyways or should i get a 50 watt red light rather than a 100 so theres still some overhead light for cooler side to not be too cold but not enough heat tomake hot side with pad too hot?
suggestions please

The best thing I think for you to do is to take it out of a tank and put it in a tub with the heating pad under that. Drill some holes in the tub and save yourself the hassle of trying to keep humidity up in a tank. It can be done but it is not as easy as a tub. The tub will also hold the heat better to allow you the correct temps.

I agree. Glass aquariums are great for fish, not so much for reptiles.

When you say tub what do you mean and how do u get a "lid" over a tub ... so you mean like tupperware?

a tub set up:
http://www.ball-pythons.net/gallery/files/1/2/1/2/8/hpim0476.jpg

Notice the drilled holes in the side. You don't need to drill so many; go measuring the humidity level inside and add holes if you need more air flow. Make sure the tub is a clear tub so that the snake can tell if it's day or night. You can buy these tubs at a Target, Walmart kind of stores. The lid is a secure lid that covers the whole tub.

i will definetly do that. now my heating pad do i secure it to like the back of the tub? i only got a small 4 inch by 5 inch heating pad.
right now for time being till tonight i have her in this that light is a heat light im using to help incubate my egg mylizards layed (was not planning on eggs so was prepared for one so iimprovised. is this ok to leave her in till next friday once i get a water bowl in there and a hut which both can fit in it? and take the heating pad put it on a cloth without taking the sicky backing off and put on one side? shed get enough heat from it for now wouldnt she? or should i put her in tank with above bulb and than use pad for when i get tub?

waterbowl and hide is not waiting till next friday its going in as soon as done boiling and cooling them down so doing that all tonight.

the UTH (heatpad) will work on a tub... i used these on tubs all the time and as long as you have it on a thermostat, you should be fine!

You can use the matt with a tub... And i would Atleast switch the lightbulb for an infra red heat bulb. Continuous light 24/7 will stress your new snake out. Yes a glass terrarium isn't a fish tank, Ive tried using them myself. However they tend to hold heat and humidity about as well as a fish tank... As long as the matt is big enough to get the whole snake on then it should be fine. Goodluck :D

I have been using undertank heat pads with plastic tubs for nearly 4 yrs with no issues. My secret? ZooMed RheoStat (http://www.zoomed.com/db/products/EntryDetail.php?EntryID=123&DatabaseID=2&SearchID=1&SearchContext=YTo1OntzOjQ6IlBhZ2UiO3M6MToiMSI7czo4 OiJTZWFyY2hJRCI7czoxOiIxIjtzOjEwOiJEYXRhYmFzZUlEIj tzOjE6IjIiO3M6NzoiSGVhZGluZyI7czo5OiJUZXJyYXJpdW0i O3M6MTU6IlByb2R1Y3RDYXRlZ29yeSI7czo3OiJIZWF0aW5nIj t9)

Can be found at most PETsMARTs, Petcos, Amazon.com and most other reptile supply outlets for $20-30.

The UTH will work fine on a tub. Make sure it's hooked up to a thermostat ;)

ok than i will definetly get a tub on friday and my terrarium she going in till than has the red light. thats why i have the tin foil on this light right now to block her from the glare so shes shaded i had no intentions ever of leavnig her with the setup in picture if i left her in this tank i was goign to put tank and allin other tank with red light or just set this tank on heating pad without taking sticking backing off heating pad till i get tub.
but ill take her and put her in terranium until i get tub give her more room.

I know it's really exciting to have a new snake- but you should let her relax and not handle her for at least a week and until she's eating for you regularly. ;)
She's a cutie though!!

(Also, you should post pics of your puppy on the furry friends thread: http://www.ssnakess.com/forums/general-discussion/83612-post-your-furry-friends-here.html :D )

ok so i am guessing i need to feed bella pinky mice or will she take a small mouse? i got some pinkies but figured id ask

Gungirl

Feed rats not mice. Just get a rat the same size or a little thicker than the largest part of her body.

sherriwat
05-09-12, 02:03 PM
so like new born rats? cause shes as thick as my thumb lol.

Rat pups (no fur) should be fine, i fed my Royal rats from the get go - slightly larger (up to twice his girth) than him and he is thriving. Once they get some decent size on them obviously its impossible to get rats bigger than their girth but then they arent growing so much so need less nutrients anyway :)

oh ok ill get those instead if i can find them im trying to find a rat breeder in my area alot cheaper than pet store.

got bella her plastic tote todays not exactly like the pics i was shown but the sides still slaps the lid on and it is clear. i have 4 holes cut in sides (tiny smallbreathing hole (i dont have a drill so did best i can) she cant get out of them they r big enough for air to get in but barely noticable.
i have the heating pad attached to one side on the bottom.
i attached a picture below.

its smaller but snakes small so this will do her for a bit she actually has alot of space in this.

sherriwat
05-10-12, 02:56 PM
its big enough for a hut and good sized bowl and her drift wood rub with alot of space to spare

Make sure she has TWO huts! She'll need a hide on each end of the tub. Also, she doesn't need a lot of wide open spaces. Ball pythons prefer to have hiding room. Some babies get intimidated about going out in the open. Otherwise, looks good! Post a pic when you've furnished all of it and tell us the temps and humidity so we can assure you're on the right path :)

While you're at the pet store, I would also highly recommend one of the many books available on the captive husbandry of ball pythons.

i looked for a book when we got ted and out petstore doesnt have one. she ahs her hut on one side and her drift wood on the other side. she seems to really like her driftwood alot doesnt matter what side tank its on hot or cold she always goes for her drift wood more than her hut. if i put another hut in there idhave tot ake drift wood out or shed have 0 room. temps where good before u let her crawl in. i opened container she was in and let her go to her new home herself if she wanted to i didnt handle her. i havent looked at temps since shes been ebcause i dont want to open top for couple days. but temps where 89 hot side (stayed 89 for 1 hr before putting her in) and cold side goes between 76- 80 kinda fluxuates the couple times i looked. humidity is a bit low, but i think its because i kept lifting lid to check that temps where right before i put her in it was 60% and fromwhat iv read it should be about 70 so i figure once lid is on and stays on we will have humidity there too. ill proably check in am tomake sure humidity did go up if it didnt ill give her a bigger bowl.

my humidity is under hut same as hot temp (they are not taking up her space at all and they are not permenant i plan on getting better than those little round things that cost 5 bucks) her other temp one is kinda under drift wood the 2 places i know she'll be the most. i figured humidity could go under hut instead of drift wood because drift woods closer to the water.

shes an escape artist when i opened lid to give yas a picture and because i was temp curious she was playing in her water roaming all round tank checking it all out lol.

temps are the same and humidity read at 72.

see how the drift wood gives her kinda a hide too without it being a hide. thats why she doesnt have 2 hides she hides pretty good under that. oh and everything looks smaller than it really is my phone takes bad pics.

Take the light way as it will dry out the air inside the tank, just use the uth with a thermostat control the temp is more than enough. I look at your pic, the snake wil get cooked.
