View Full Version : Facing my fears...

I think...

I'm getting a baby leopard gecko tomorrow and the breeder highly recommended feeding dubias. I hate roaches. That and probably centipedes are my only fear in life.

But since they're better for the gecko than crickets, I'm gonna at least try. :sorry:

What's the best way to keep dubias so that I don't ever have to see them or feel their presence unless I'm feeding? (which I'm probably gonna make my roomie do lol)

They're for sure gonna be living in the garage. The guy is super nice and giving me some heat tape for free.

I can't believe I'm gonna do this. :wacky: My heart is racing.

I know some people just put them on top of one of the snake enclosures, but with a dubia colony you have to make sure you provide them fresh food every day.

No way are they going to be in my room. I get the heebejeebiez just thinking about it. What do they eat?

They eat lots of stuff, but only feed them stuff you would feed your lizard. None of that gross artificial crap.

A great guide for feeding roaches is the fruit and vegetable guide recommended for blue tongue skinks. Check out bluetongueskinks.org.

Lol, you guys are a riot. Get a heat mat and set it up on a thermostat under your enclosure of choice for the roaches. As far as temp goes someone else should know that.

You can no longer be a nominee for gecko's godmother.

I suggest you ensure that you aren't breaking any local bylaws on pests BEFORE setting up a dubia colony. I know up here that all roaches are considered pests and are thus illegal to keep and own; let alone breed.

They're legal in most of the US, Aaron.

MOST...I'm just putting it out there that it's always a good idea to check these things out before doing them.

I didn't even think about that since the guy I'm getting them from sells them publicly. But I'm pretty sure they're legal here.

You poor Canadians though... it seems like nearly everything is illegal there :(

Trollbie, they're fine in California. One of the people I get them from regularly ships to a client there that I hooked him up with. He won't ship to areas that are illegal, so we both checked the laws before hand.

I think we have better laws in this regard. I'd hate to have a roach infestation because a neighbour has a lizard.

I would check for yourself though. I know a lot of people who are breaking by-laws who sell publicly. Either they don't know or don't care to find out.

Dubias can't survive in Canada outside of their environment, let alone breed.

Trollbie
05-03-12, 02:18 PM
I just read that dubias cannot survive anywhere in the continental US except maybe Florida.

I can't find anything reliable, but it seems like even if they were illegal here, it's not really enforced. I'm gonna make sure they can't escape because I'd die if they did lol

They can survive in a household and possibly breed in the right areas of the house.

I don't know what you're arguing with anyway. I simply made a comment that one should check that an insect isn't illegal before breeding them.

I'm not arguing at all. I'm just stating what I found. My house is way too cold for them, especially since they'll be in the garage.

I want to find out but I don't know where to look. Any ideas?

I have to admit I was unconvinced that they wouldnt be able to live outside their tubs too. However as someone who has had some escapees lately, I can safely say that they dont seem to be able to live outside their specific requirements. I thought I had recaptured them all (which now that I think about it seems pretty stupid ;). I came in the next day and there was one dead on the floor, and two more the following day. I did another search and found three more dead ones that day. My animal room stays at 76 degrees F and around 35% humidity, so they really do seem to have a very specific set of needs to stay alive. Which I like knowing...

Ill vouch for that. The Central Coast of California is way too cold for them. Even in the summer, it rarely gets above 65F

I thought I'd act hardcore when I picked them and then cry on the way home, but it's not even that bad lol. They're small and they will not breed. My job is too keep them alive until he eats them all.

They're too small. My gecko is a hatchling so he only gave me small ones and said they should last me about a month. I'm 100% okay with that lol
