View Full Version : OMG I GOT A KOMODO DRAGON! (Varanus komodoensis)

So I was out in town and I saw a shop that was SELLING A KOMODO DRAGON. I couldn't pass it up, so we brought him home. He's very docile and doesn't mind a good scratch behind the ear.
I know I shouldn't have made an impulse buy, and I feel really bad about not having a proper set up for him, but how could I pass up a komodo dragon?!
Right now he's set up in a fish tank (I know, bad, bad, bad!!!!) but the top is covered, and so are the sides. He has two hides, three large climbing branches, a water bowl large enough for him to soak in, and deep substrate. His basking spot is 155F, cool side 75, and humidity between 60 and 85%. His big boy enclosure will be done by Monday.
The store had him eating ground turkey (the San Diego Zoo diet), but I'm going to be changing that. My area sells pigs by the pound, so he will be eating those, as well as whole chickens, turkeys, and quail (not mine, obviously). I will also include crab, shrimp, deer meat when my friend goes hunting, and some fish.
He's settling in nicely now and exploring everything in his enclosure as I'm typing this. His big boy enclosure will be a six car garage, climate controlled, and I will be installing a rain system in there. Besides a few humidifiers and the rain system, I will need tips on keeping humidity up in such a large space. He will also have two basking spots, and UV-B will be provided in both of those.
Anyway.....
....
I'm sure you're all very excited to meet Mojo Jojo (Mojo, for short).

HERE HE IS!!!!!

No way, it was totally worth plastering him all over the forums. There's somebody on another forum that doesn't get that he's fake. I'm going to give her a day before I tell her.

Come on, how could I resist? I saw it in the store and instantly knew I had to get it. :D
As soon as I read, "it's in a fish tank" I knew you were full of crap. Before that it was hopefulness that somehow komodo breeding was going that well lately. Tease!!

had me going for a minute too, all i was thinking about was legalities (also what kinda gave it away) like the fact it is almost impossible to get a permit to "own" a komodo
I knew that komodos were really smart... BUT training him to strike the same pose for every pic, well that's just on a whole other level of intelligence :D
Its not the same pose every time, he's practising the Zoolander technique :D
Great thread!!

You never know, it could be an itty bitty baby in one of those HUGE saltwater tanks.

I'm a little worried, guys... He wasn't interested in breakfast this morning. I know I should wait two weeks for him to settle in before I worry, but sometimes I can't help it.
Try scenting with some deer. Also it is mating season, that could be throwing him off :)

I have a friend who's a hunter. I can ask him for deer. :)

No... No... you won't get him to eat that way, what you need is water buffalo scented crickets, not deer scented ones.

So I had a lady at work tell me she bought he son a baby komodo at a reptile expo in Salisbury Ontario.check there. What's really great is they were only three inches long! So that tank will work for awhile.

Oh no! I don't know if I can GET water buffalo! A person on the road to my friend's house breeds bison, though. Could I take the crickets and rub them on the bison?

Best thread ever! I'm so looking forward to seeing the little guy grow!

You could give bison a go... don't know if it would go down to well as American Bisons are not native to Komodo or Rinca.
Failing that you could try a goat as there's goats in Rinca and komodo to scent the crickets. I really hope you get the little guy eating then we can breed him with Gregg's ackies when his up to size.
I bags the first pair...

No.. it has to be from the goatee of the goat. That's what the komodos prefer.

Not yet. I will rub it in his goatee tomorrow.
