imo a truely remarkable snake mate
one of only a few species of python with the ability to change colour:shocked:
are they planning on releasing captive bred, back into the wild to boost their survival ?
also i would have thought that giving the aborigines the licence to produce these wonderfull snakes, would have benifited their people more.....
rather than giving the licence to an established snake breeder
i don't think there will be oenpelli pythons over here in my life time mate
although its looking like i will be able to get my hands on roughies in the coming years, after their no doubt crazy pricing drops to an affordable level, now we have a few breeding pairs in europe
thanks for sharing the link
cheers shaun:)

The financial division of the profits is a political minefield, aborigines are the traditional owners of Arhnem land and as such they are free to use resources to their liking. Where it got confusing is the ownership of wildlife traditional land owners right V the crowns claims to it's native wildlife.
This has been a decade long project for Dr Bedford, what happens on the conservation side is unknown to the hobby, how the finances are settled will only be known to them. We are probably looking at another decade at least before they start to appear in captivity in any real numbers. Each state has it's own licensing system on what species can and can not be kept in that state.
For example Western Australia is the only place that roughies are found in the wild, yet they are the only state in Australia not allowed to keep them in captivity (ain't that crazy lol)
On the subject of roughies, there was only ever 8 or so initial specimens brought into captivity here in Oz from memory. That was about a decade ago... in that time they started off at around 20k+ a pair. They breed like any other carpet mate, fast forward 7-8 years and they are $250 - $350 each in todays market.

re Western Australia
originally i assume the law banning people from keeping roughies, was introduced to STOP people TAKING them from the wild
you would think now that roughies are prolific in captivity, someone from Western Australia, would be allowed to keep proven captive bred's
as far as the wild life in Aboriginal land, you would think the wildlife would belong to them
Australia was their's from the begining of time after all, until the brittish/ENGLISH stole it,back in the day.....!!!
trust an English Government to STILL be causing crap in a country,NOTHING to do with them
the English Government has a LOT to ANSWER for, even now they're a bunch b*******...!!
lets hope come our independance refferendum in 2014,we get our independance, and rid ourselves of the parasites;)
cheers shaun

YES! Oenpelli pythons! So happy they were finally able to get this project going, they're stunning snakes.

If seeing them in person would make you loose your mind... I'd hate to see what would happen if you actually get to hold one lol.

Very cool. What kind of snake is the one that is in the tree in the video? The body looked like a Woma, but the head looked like a Carpet.

Boiga irregularis - Brown tree snake (night tiger form).
Night tigers are only found in the top end...
I have been contemplating about getting them for years... the mild venom kinda freaks the misses out though.
Great video, I sure hope he is able to find more and complete his goal. I myself would love the chance to see an oenpelli python, let alone own one, so its a treat to see anyone even care about them to this degree really. Thanks for updating!!
