This is Severus (the) Snake. I'm new to the reptile world and don't know much about them other than how to properly care for them. My friend got this little guy/girl in a trade and I took her/him off her hands. I plan to find someone to probe for gender soon, but I'd at least like to know what s/he is. Could someone help me do that? I would greatly appreciate it.

Hmm... Its really hard to tell just from that one photo, but it looks like some type of rat snake to me. Is there any chance you could take some more pics?

I'm about to leave for work, but when I get home this afternoon I will take some and get them up here. Probably a better close up of his head and scales. Any other shots I should focus on for better identification?

These are the best two shots I could get of his head:

Hmmm, that's a little weird cause gophers, rats, and corns all have ventral patterns.
The only thing I can think of is a motley corn snake, which would make sense since it has the motley pattern. BUT that's definitely not a pure corn snake.
IMHO, if anything was possible, I would say that was a rat x motley corn hybrid.
But that doesn't make sense, so I'm stumped

Hahahahahaha!!!!! Isn't that the TRUTH!
For the OP, really to be truthfully honest there is no telling what that "Rat snake" is unless you have seen the parents. Please do not breed that to anything until you can know for sure what sub-species it is or what gene's are in it. Just so you can truthfully tell people what you are offering as offspring. It's a cool looking "Pet" serpent.

I'm thinking it looks like a .... Baby yellow rat snake.
Am I missing something? No seriously I do not own a rat snake so if I am missing some obvious cue that it is not please tell me. But yeah to me all I see is a tiny rat snake.....?
Maybe a yellow bred to a grey?? Need a pic of his lower face. Below the eye.

I thought it looked like a garter! BTW Hi Jetta!!
I like that snake, either way. Great pet.
I was hoping Wayne would pop up and tell us if it's a garter!

Sad, but probably slightly true.

There is no way I'll ever be able to find his parents, so I guess he will just continue to be my "mystery colubrid". I had no plans whatsoever to breed him. He is my pet, and that is all he will be.

Hi, Jaleely! Thanks, Severus is really awesome. Regardless of what he is, I will love him, but I slightly hope he is a hybrid. That way, he can be Severus (the) Snake the Half Blood Prince....

Definitely not a garter. I still think it's a rat snake of some sort, although it doesn't look pure to me. Like Terranaut said, it could be something like a yellow x gray rat snake. Who knows....

Thank you guys for all of the help in pointing me closer to the right direction. I think s/he looks most like a yellow x gray rat snake, but I guess I'll never know for sure.

I can't believe no one else has answered this yet!
Anyway...it WOULD be pretty cool if he was really the half-blood prince though ; )

Youre funny :) The fun thing about hybrids is trying to figure out the component parts.
