Yesterday we had this....

http://www.thamnophis.co/storm/storm.jpg

The ground is still covered with wet sloppy snow, about 45 minutes ago I noticed something dark under the surface while out walking the dogs, so I reach down and dug out a Garter snake.

When I first brought it in the house, his body temperature was 36 degrees.

Warmed it to a nice 82 degrees and it's doing fine.

Will be released once the normal spring weather returns.

Little does that Garter know how lucky he is, Rescued and brought to the garter equivalent of a health spa :P

Plus one for proper use of the word rescue.

Wow Wayne. That's intense.

another casualty of the storm.. My crab apple tree is all busted up.

and this poor Robin was in the tree when it snapped, it's doing quite well, even takes worms right out of Dorothy's hands.

It's wing has only superficial feather damage, so it will need care for a while until new feathers replace the damaged ones.

Let's hope it keeps on eating.

awww!! What would have happened to the Garter? I mean do they like, hybernate or something? Also why would it be out in the snow and how would it let itself be frozen like that?
Actually how is it possible for it to survive being *that* cold? I should really read up on how cold blooded critters work compared to warm blooded i guess lol

BUT cool of you, you know that!

Wayne, those animals are so lucky to have wonderful and caring people to care for them when circumstances , aka mother nature, throws them a curveball. You and Dorothy are just awesome:)

The only reason that snake survived this was the ground under the snow retained som of the heat, so it did not freeze up solid.

Garter snakes can survive all the way down to 32 degrees, below that (freezing) the water molocules in the snakes brain will expand and rupture the cells causing death.

Where abouts in New York are you located? I am from Interlaken, a small town between Ithaca and Geneva on Route 96.

I love that I thought this thread was about a potential morph, and find out it was more of a rescue mission.
Nice job, glad he got a few extra meals out of you

How is this one doing?

Been living free for a while now. I released it as soon as the nice weather came back.

aww...I wonder if I could be big enough to do release, if I once caught something. I would probably get too attached. I suppose if the animal acted like it hated being in a cage, I would be able to do what was best for it.
Still, it probably enjoyed the safe spot it had for a while! Might show up in your yard again : ) That'd be cool.
