5 wide by 3 tall by 2 deep is plenty.

I would certainly think so. I would be comfortable keeping the biggest of carpets in there.
That wouldn't be a bad size for a smaller adult male scrub either.

I have a very similiar sized enclosure for my red tail boa. It measures 66W x 22D x 30T. They are not very hard to build as it is simply a plywood box dressed up with some hardwood ( in this case oak) trim. Find a book on basic cabinet constrution and you will be well on your way to building one!
I added additional space (and privacy) by using the middle drawer as a hide out. The snake has access through a hole drilled into the bottom of the box and is hidden by a hollow trunk/branch. I have a glass bottom with a heating pad attached to it. This is where the red tail usually goes for a few days after eating. Or anytime he wants to be out of sight. I use a standard flourescent fixture for general lighting (center and right side) and use a heat lamp for basking (left side). Let me know if you want some more pics and info.

Thanks! For the color I used a very dark brown (van dyke brown) along with some india ink. Makes a very nice deep dark brown.

I just made a snake cage using an ebook I got on the internet for cheap ($27 or something close), was worth it because it saved me a lot of money and I did it right the first time. I found it by googleing building reptile cages, a little down on the page I clicked on the title, How to build enclosures for reptiles - custom snake cages - arboreal ... The website was called reptile cage plans.

Mine is 4' long by 2' wide by approx 1' 6" tall, but you could build yours any size the same
way. The book said to use Melamine for the base and MDF or plywood for the sides, back and top, but I decided to go with all Melamime for the whole thing then use little plastic screw covers you can get and the veneer that comes in a roll and you iron on for the unfinished edges. I'm quite happy how it turned out using all Melamine, its just a pain to work with the stuff, gotta be careful and predrill all your holes for screws and put painters tape on your cutting lines before you cut it to stop it from chipping along where you cut it.
Here are the pictures of my cage with everything finished except I haven't put the heat pad in yet, substrate, built a background to cover up the white Melamine, water dish, etc. If you have any questions feel free to ask and I will see if I can answer them the best I can.
