My friend and I were walking around in some woods just exploring. We have found garter snakes there before but today we found a snake we believe to be venomous. I have no idea i texted a picture to my dad and he said it looks like a baby rattle snake because the head has things on the sides where it keeps venom. any way we caught it in a water bottle and my friend put it in some kind of tank where it cant get out. can any one identify it for me and tell me what to with it. the picture is kind of distorted cause it was in the water bottle. we poked air hole so it wouldn't die. if needed ill go over to his house and get a better picture,

No idea what it is but best bet is to put it back where you got it from and dont pick up anything that you dont know what it is just in case it does bite you :)

I agree with Rob, the best thing to do is to release the little critter where you found it. I know it's tempting to pick a snake up, but unless you are 100 percent sure about the species, and whether it's venomous or not, your best bet is to admire the critter from afar, and leave it alone, so you do not get bit.

If I were you I would encourage my friend to let the snake go ahead and bite him. If nothing happens it isn't venomous.
Serious note: where are you located? It could be a hog nose.

That photo makes it pretty impossible. All we can get is the color. A clearer photo would do wonders.
Please let that little creature go in the wild. He won't survive in that water bottle and you really shouldn't keep a venomous snake with no experience.

But the picture is still taken through a foggy glass wall.
Look down into the tank so nothing is between the camera and snake.

Really hard to tell without a Clear Picture, It doesnt look much like a copperhead to me, but again horrible picture, Regardless Catching and attempting to keep a Venomous snake is an EXTREMELY bad Idea, My friends and i used to flip the woodpiles often back home in Missouri to catch copperheads to feed his Kingsnake, One day he got bitten, and due to his own idiocy he did not go to the hospital right away, It cost him a fairly large portion of his thumb
Moral is, Keeping a venomous reptile while extremely rewarding, Is also a dangerous hobby, and taking an animal that you cannot properly identify, and have little experience with, could potentially end with you in the ground.

Apart from all the issues regarding taking a wild animal etc etc
As you dont know what snake it is how do you know what temps humidity etc it needs and what it is going to need to be fed?

That and if your friend DOES get bit and need an ambulance there's a pretty good chance the authorities will find out that he's keeping a venomous snake without the proper permits. Could be a bad day, ALOT of pain, and a hefty fine...

Well, I can tell you it isn't a copper head. They have (to me) a very distinct pattern and that doesn't seem to have a patter? However I could be wrong since the picture isn't a very good one.

I agree and I don't think it's a copper head either. Bad pictures but the head does look like it's venomous.
To the OP: please follow our advice. If it's venomous and you guys get bit, there could be alot of trouble involved. Plus there's husbandry issues. You don't know what it eats or temps or humidity it needs. Even if it's not venomous, please let it go. There are too many other captive bred and born snakes that are cheap to buy and keep. Let the wild ones stay wild :)

I think it's a rat snake or a bull/gopher snake- definitely not a copperhead or rattlesnake. The body shape, head structure, and scalation are all wrong. We do need a clearer picture to really tell though. Also, there is no rattle button on that tail...so NOT a rattler.
