Wow, great looking snakes! To be honest, I never even noticed that Ball Pythons had an iridesence to them. Guess I never saw them in the right lighting or looked close enough... I will make a point of paying more attention next time.

Healthy individuals do, but in *my* threads we call them Royal pythons, not Ball pythons :D

Thanks for the info. Maybe that's why I never noticed a sheen. The only ones I've ever held were from (non-reptile specific) pet stores, maybe the parameters in their enclosures was not up to par or something (I would not have noticed anything at time time).

May I ask why you only call them Royal Pythons? (not being cocky, just curious).

Todd,i have to admit when i saw the title of your thread.....

i clicked on it to see how folk reacted to you using " royal pythons " instead of " ball pythons "

imo they should be reffered to as " royal's " in everyones threads mate

cheers shaun

That is their correct, proper name. :)

So (and I appologize in advance for going off topic), if I am understanding correctly "Ball Python" is more of a misnomer and not a species name? If that's the case, I never knew that, I thought it was just an alternate name for the species. I'm sorry.

(I completely understand your remark then Todd, because it irritates me when people call my African Grey a "Congo" African Grey, because it's not a real name just a nickname or marketing name for the nominate subspecies).

python regius (ball python)

The name "royal python" (from the Latin regius) is based in part on the story that cleopatra supposedly wore the snake around her wrist.

It's not really a misnomer, but it's more of a hold-over from the days when Royals were first available and they were all wild-caught. They were so shy that the majority of them would ball-up for hours if disturbed. These days you don't see that as much, and if you do it's because the snake simply isn't well-adjusted. Being some many generations into captive-bred now has taken a great deal of fear out of them, so you really only see that on snakes that are man-handled or barely handled at all.

It's very similar to the African Grey/Congo thing, as you mentioned. For the record, everyone who's explained why they're called Royal Python here has been correct, so that saved me some time - Thanks folks!

Are you referring to the "glow" of a pre-ovalation gravid female, or just the irridescence of ball pythons in general?
