So I signed up of OT at work today, which is normally my day off. It's really sunny and great out. I hit my herpind spot around 7:50, 8am. This is the earliest I've gone out there, but I wanted to go and had to go before work. Anyways, it was pretty warm and I was expecting to see snakes basking but to my surprise I only found three sallies, NO snakes, not even at the garter den I found last week.

They must all sleep in. From now on, so will I.

What time of day do any of you other herpers see the most? For me, now that I've ruled out early morning it's 10a-1pm and then after 6pm.

I'm in Phoenix Arizona so it gets HOT by 11 am, and it's uncomfortably warm in the morning.. I usually wait until 5 p.m and get to my favorite spot around 6. That's usually when I have the best luck. Now in late august to early October we get a "monsoon season" and after a good rain I can go out and drive and see all kinds of snakes. Just cruise nice and slow with the high beams on.. But it's almost always after 6 pm that the field herping action gets good. The only time going out early morning is good for me is early spring because the temps drop to low 50's at night and quickly get up to the 60's by 7 am.. I can usually spot them basking..

Dusk or just before for me. Pretty much all day if in a heavily wooded area.
