View Full Version : What kind of glue?

I finally got a piece of plexiglass to do what snakekid did for his lid. (Turn a screen top into not a screen top)
He used superglue, but I forgot to get some (oops). Do you think glue gun will be good enough?
I could glue on top of the screen lid instead of the bottom if you think glue gun isn't strong enough.
Also, how many holes should I drill? (enough air, but also enough humidity)

I think that would work as long as you don't have weight on top of it, but I doubt you will, because you have to hang the light a few inches above it so the plexiglass doesn't melt.

Yeah the lamps are at least like 5in above the top

That should be fine :)

how many holes?

How big is the tank?? Mine was for a ten gallon and I did 2 rows of 5 or 6 on both sides but if it's much bigger I would do 3 rows of 5 holes on both sides

That should be fine. You just got to mess around with it until you get your humidity how you want it. You should post a picture of your lid :D

So it turns out I don't need glue. The plexi fits perfect, so I just lay it on the tank and put the screen top over it so that I can still clamp it.

But I'm paranoid about having enough air holes. I did 2 rows of 5 on each side. Is it enough?

Damnnnn that looks slick ;p. Nice job! Also, this may be a stupid idea and I don't know if it will work. But, could you buy a small aquarium airpump and shove the tube in a hole and turn it on. I would think it would pump a little more fresh air in and help the air inside the tank move a little allowing more air flow, but idk. Just a thought.

Not a bad idea. Hopefully some experienced peoples will come in and comment on that :)

That'll keep humidity in great, but I would add the same number of holes on the other side. The pressure differential between the warm and cool sides will keep the air moving. Think when you have a window in one room and a door open to outside in another room and a door between and the door randomly slams closed, yay pressure!

There is 2 rows of 5 holes on each side. So I'm good?

Yeah, I would think so. Just see how it holds heat and humidity and either add holes or cover them up as necessary.
I'm gonna close the store, I'll be back on when I get home.

You know that sounds like a lot of work to make a bad cage into a working one. Here's a better idea for future snakes.
Step 1. Buy a tub that's taller than you'd normally use.
Step 2. Cut side out of tub and attach a plexiglass "window"
Step 3. Profit

How is that less work than cramming a piece of plexiglas on top of an already set up glass enclosure? :hmm:

This is a temporary home until I build a custom one. I already had then tank so all I had to buy is a sheet of plexi and drill holes into it.

Do you think my set up with the plexi works?

I'm hardly an expert but it seems like a nice looking and functional solution to your issue. Easier than trying to make plexi stick to a tub IMO.

Both seem equally easy to be honest. I get what Aaron means and think its actually a fantastic idea. I might go get some non-see through tubs and see what I can come up with. Might even find a way to make them front opening.
Oh hey I don't think it's a bad idea. I just think if you already have nice looking glass aquarium, why would you bother getting a bin and gluing a window in the side? Really a moot discussion I guess and to some degree a matter of taste (I think a bin with a window would be a bit of an eyesore compared to a glass tank).

I don't mind my bins, they're handy and really don't look bad at all.
