yeah I researched them a bit after he asked if I wanted it and if I thought there was any way I could properly care for it I would have taken it in a heart beat. I know that I don't have the room or knowledge right now. So he is keeping it but if and when I decide I can take it he will give it to me. It is 2 yrs old and seems in great shape. I hope some day I can take it.

They were on the cover of Reptile magazine a couple years ago. Here's a link to the article about them. Blue-Spotted Monitor (http://www.reptilechannel.com/lizards/lizard-care/blue-spotted-monitor.aspx)

US vs Canadian prices, there aren't many species up there that are less expensive. However you guys do have access to some cool species that we don't have IIRC.

I'm probably a bit older than some of you-but on the subject of the article in Reptile Magazine on Blue Spotted Tree Monitors(known by 99.9% as just Blue Tree Monitors-not that it's important LOL or Varanus maraei )A little history on Robert Sprackland, the author of that article,he studies monitors. His books from my childhood are where a lot of the misconceptions about monitor care came about-things that haunt them still.Though his current articles are better anybody that is familiar with his earlier writings won't be so unethuiastic about his articles.
He also named Varanus macraie scientifically and gave it the common name Bluespotted Tree Monitor-just didn't catch on.

Mo,
we are most likely in the same age range. I agree 100% with you. Those giant lizard books were not even good for the time they were written. There was actually a photo of a V. albigularis that was labbled as V. exanthimaticus in the first one.

I've read some pretty bad books, but I don't think I've read those.

Great pictures but not worth reading in my opinion. Trust me, you aready know more than the literature can tell you.
