I got as far as "to help, he's brought along a camera crew" before falling off my chair. But thanks for posting them, I only saw that documentary once. Is there a way to download the videos?

Right?! You see a monitor you instantly assume carnivore... Trippy....

Frugivore Rob, They eat fruit.

That is really cool but I have a question...

If their diet in the wild consists of fruit, I would consider it safe to assume that they eat the seeds as well.
Now if one were to feed regular (non organic), which is what those grapes look like (grapes are not naturally that perfect), would they be missing out on important nutrition from the seeds? That's if you feed a diet that consists of "seedless" fruit, or as I like to call it "mutant" fruit.

Just wondering how much of a difference that would make :)

I don't want to put words out there that get me scolded later, but from what I understand apparently they pass the seeds in there feces.

What troubles me is why are people attempting to keep them in captivity??

Anyway, here is an excellent detailed write up.

For the same reason people attempt to keep any other monitor in captivity?

Yeah the video you showed me said they help spread the seeds by eating them and passing them through the digestive system...

So an endangered species, on the brink of extinction, that does not fare well in captivity is acceptable to keep??

I'll get right to work on my Komodo enclosure straight away.

No, no, no, I didn't say that, and I'm certainly not justifying it, either. I thought my response was obvious, but after re-reading it I realized it wasn't.

Basically, my answer is "because they want to". That doesn't mean it's "right" or "acceptable". It just means that they have the ability to do so so they do.

frugivore can be a type of omnivore, where they can eat more than just fruit.

There are hardly any animals that only eat fruit, and they tend to be seed destroyers that get protein from kernels. Most frugivores feed on pulp, pass the seeds and get their protein elsewhere. This lizard gets it almost entirely from snails.

this is a pattern people here don't see and continue here,no different than the Sav saga-you believe something based on a little bit of facts that may be out of context then the next thing we have a monitor misunderstood or it's only a monitor that eats fruit. There is a reason most monitors are similar looking, that is the monitor part that makes them successful-that they can eat fruit is just a part of the total package. The messed up thing is saying they are all basically the same for some is somehow a bad thing-

Please point out where ANYONE said on this board that this Frugivore dined EXCLUSIVELY on fruit. Thank you....

if you read it more carefully I did not say anybody said they just eat fruit, what i am implying is we make assumptions about specific species of monitors.Someone said they have not been kept wiuth any sucess in captivity, which may be true. But that's true of Sav's as well but some know how to keep them sucessfully-and it's not by treating them different from other species of monitors but understanding them.

no problem, V olivaceus remind me of a species available in the pet trade, Varanus spinulosus from the Solomon Islands.A small island locality animal that is available that probably shouldn't hopefully someone breeds them.
