So I'm thinking about getting a snake and I've been looking at some online. I know a lot of you have milks so any suggestions/recommendations? It will be another month or two before I can get one but I like to make lists and get everything planned :p I'm looking at enclosures now but any suggestions in that regard would also be helpful. :)

If you get a baby, you could start out with a 20g long tank. That's what I have my milksnake in

I am also thinking of getting a milk instead of a corn. What is the smallest common milk snake in captivity because I'm not supposed to get a big snake.

I think Reds aren't supposed to get bigger than 3ft? I'm probably wrong

But what would your parents do if you got a "supposedly" small snake, and it eventually got bigger than it was "supposed" to? :p

Here's my two cents....
Many colubrids make great first snakes but the more typical ones (hardiest, easiest, most tolerant) are California Kings and Corn Snakes.
Triangulum (milk snakes) tend to be more spastic as hatchlings and only a few, like anulatta (Mexican Milks) really calm down as adults.
Most newbs want a snake they can handle and "show off."
I don't think a milk snake is that such a snake.

My milk was very spastic but calm down now as for my mountain king took him an year or so for him to stop trying to eat my nose but I caught him from the wild since I can't legally buy one here

I'm a noob and my first snake was a milk. She's never musked me or even tried to bite me. The most she's ever done is rattle he tail when I caught her off guard. Babies are nippy, but I can't imagine a baby bite being frightening enough for someone to stop handling. So I don't think you can go wrong with a baby or a tame adult.

The word "spastic" is highly offensive and should NOT be used on this forum, please refrain from using it!

Yes Nelson's can make good first snakes. I prefer Sinaloans, but that's just me. they have longer red rings, and usually get a bit larger. They take a year or so to settle down, but eventually become very pleasant to hold, and behold. Any species will vary from one individual to the next. The only snake I think that I can truely say are great from the egg as far as attitude, and calmness, is a Graybanded King. But then many babies prefer lizards, at first which can be challenging for some people.

Again, it depends on the individual snake. I have the adults, and one juvie, and none are mean. The juvie, does dash about vigurously! See, I didn't say "Spastic", lol. None have ever tried to bite me.

I concur, Jorge. I have produced a few Applegate sinaloae over the past couple of years and they seem to be calm after the first couple of feedings. With all the mixing of the two subspecies I really don't think it matters anymore. Nelson's do come in a variety of color and pattern mutations if that's what your after. True sinaloae only has hypo erythristic and patternless as far as i know.
Jorge which one of your GBK's is that one?

Yeah, I'm still scratching my head over this? Sorry no offense maent, but it is a very common description for anything with very jerky movements.
I wonder what it means over there? I know spanish, and have heard some words used by Puerto Ricans which sounds dirty to Cubans, and vise versa. Very interesting!

Back in the 80's 'that word' was used in an abusive fashion towards children with Cerebral Palsy - it is basically never used in any way except to abuse people either that have cerebral palsy or that are being clumsy by associating them with the illness.
I apologise if it has a totally different meaning in the states, its just one of those words that would have earnt me a severe "belting" when i was a kid and is in my list of words that i would never use.

Interesting how different the vocabulary in the UK and US are.. I never would have thought that word ment anything more then a term for jerky movements or an over active personality...

Thank you! I looked it up in Wikapedia as well, lol. I guess it is sometimes used that way here also, but it never became such "bad" word, here as it apperantly has in the uK.

No worries, i think we all have trigger words that piss us off through no fault of the speaker (or typer ;)).
Thank you for understanding my frustration :)

I spend a lot of time around disabilities, but I don't think I've ever heard that word used in association with celebral palsy. That's very interesting! And good thing to know for the future also!

Spastic, or spasticity is used sometimes when talking about cerebral palsy and some other muscle disorders in the hospital (I'm 1 month away from graduating as a nurse :)) Like some others said, no one I've ever met in the States has a problem with it because it's not used as an insult or derogatory term. Usually I hear it used referring to someone who is acting like they have had too much caffeine :p I've never heard it used as an insult or derisive term before. Yet another lesson in culture for me :)

The word (still cant bring myself to type it) was used in medical terms for years over here but was ambushed by those that used it derogatively so the medical profession gradually stopped using it as their patients asked them to.
I sad that language can be hijacked in this way, it like the St George Cross, to me it represents my pride in being English and all the good things that our country represents yet it has been hijacked by racist groups and is seen in racist propoganda all the time.
As a proud Englishman i would love a tattoo of the St George cross but having a skinhead haircut and the tattoo would brand me as a racist before anyone actually got to know me :(
