View Full Version : Leopard gecko eggs in the incubator

So, after losing all my other eggs recently due to molding, I've decided to scratch everything and make my own incubator (again, but this time in the house instead of the mud room where the cats can't get to it). I had two eggs laid this evening. They're currently in my incubator, which is a suspended type incubation system. The temperature is a steady 80F (incubating for female) and the humidity is at 70%. What am I missing?

Ah, in all this scrambling to get the eggs in, I forgot to get pictures! Okay, I'll have to get them in the morning. I'm about to crash. Just send me a PM or bug me here to remind me (I'm super forgetful).

And the five from last time BEFORE they molded.

They look good! Although I don't know very much about eggs.

You're selling eggs? How much? I'll pay $1 for both. Since they aren't easter decorated.

Btw... who laid them?

BarelyBreathing

Hahaha, no, a crested gecko came in that deli cup. I like to recycle. (And now that stupid R-E-C-Y-C-L-E song from Rocko's Modern Life is in my head.)

The parents of the current clutch (Bell hybinos):
Dad is Tom Cruise

Mom is Renee Zellweger

And here is the proud momma after laying the eggs and then tearing crickets to bits:

The flash totally ruined her color, though.

So I'm a total idiot and didn't realize that it says it in the title what kind of eggs they are, but pictures are always awesome :D

No. A crested Gecko. We can just get both. Since we are living together we have to learn how to agree! LOL

I think you might be keeping them to wet. Especially when your having molding problem with sphagnum as a medium, the acidic properties of it usually inhibit mold. Let me get you in touch with a friend of mine, he breeds african fat tails, so he should be able to help. I'll let him know you will be contacting him.

Here's his email: shenandoahreptiles@gmail.com

His name is David Deem btw.

I had them on Eco Earth before, not sphagnum. The Eco Earth was moist but completely drained so there was absolutely zero excess moisture, as advised by several professional breeders. Thank you for the email.

I personally use vermiculite, so does my friend David. You have any questions, don't hesitate to email him, he loves to help.

Now I have the new batch of eggs in a suspended type incubation system. No substrate.

I just came across something on another site that I thought might be useful to you. someone had mentioned that they were getting mold on their crested gecko eggs. The solution was brushing (with a small brush) NOT pouring, food powder on the eggs. This was recommended by someone who breeds them. I have never heard of this (i don't breed though). It may be something you may want to look into a little more...

What type of food powder?

I would have used vermiculite.

Like an anti fungal foot powder. Just lightly brush some on the shell. you may want to look into it a bit more though. It makes sense that it would work but I have never heard of anyone else doing it.

That is one of the worst things you can do. The powder will get into the pores of the egg shell and cut off the oxygen supply to the fetus.

Besides all that, healthy, strong, living eggs do not mold up. They only become moldy when the fetus is either dead or weak.

This can happen for a number of reasons but looking at the photos, I would say the eggs drowned from too much water in the substrate.

Hence why I said look into it more, I am not sure it is just something I saw on another site.

Ive built a home made incubator as well I use a styrofoam cooler with to wooden rods going through it that the egg containers rest on. On the bottom I put a zoo med heating pad stuck on a piece of glass from an old picture frame and a dish full of water for humidity. I have a digital zilla thermometer and a zilla humidity gauge on the inside. Punch a few holes on the sides for ventilation and it's all done. Really simple but my buddy made one exactly like mine and has had 0 issues with it.
