Here he is. :bouncy::bouncy::bouncy:
Haven't decided on a name yet. I got him all cleaned up and set up in his new home. So far he seems really healthy despite the circumstances. He's very curious and friendly so far. Hasn't even taken a defensive posture once.

Still unsure what to do about the mother. I'm pretty set on something being genetically wrong with her. I got her for 50 bucks in a shop that just got 3 in. Being the cheap a** I am, I got it. The next time I went in the rest were all dead and handed to me to skin for him. Despite many baytril treatments and increased heat, she always bubbled, bloated her throat and had secretions around her mouth. Half the time she seems fine, the other half , half dead. When I introduced the male for breeding, she showed these signs again. After a few weeks together he never showed any signs. That makes me think it's just her. If it was an RI i'm pretty sure he would have gotten from her, but he's always healthy.
I don't know what to do with her. Try to find her another home? I'd hate to euthanize her but she seems like she's in pain most of the time.

He sure is a lucky fellow. And quite the looker! Congratulations on him.
As far as the mother, yes, it sounds like a problem with her. You're the one who spends time with her, so that is your call to make. I'm sorry you're in his predicament.

I would cap her myself. Something is definitely wrong.

I don't have the time to take care of her as good as i'd like to right now. I've tried finding her a new home yesterday and today. It's either idiot friends who know nothing about snakes other than "I'll be so cool" or back to the shop I got her from.

What about a snake rescue?
Never heard of such a thing here. I'll post some adds at the vets around and give it a week.
Any tips for the new guy would be appreciated. Should I not even attempt a feed until the first shed? How long until it's safe to pop it?

PM me what county you're located in and I'll ask around.
RandyRhoads
04-02-12, 09:29 PM
PM sent. This is a place that will find him a home or take care of her right? If they're just going to kill her, I can do that myself. And have a shiny new wallet and boots.

Yes, rescues will take care of her and find her a home.

I've always been told to wait until after the first shed to probe, I'm not sure about popping, though. I'd keep him on paper towels to make sure that everything is normal.

Thought about it but I don't know if that's a bit too much on the cheesy side. Anxious to get him fed...

Regardless of name or gender, that is one really cool boa! Is that called a "Circle Back?" It almost looks like s/he has more saddles than normal. (I know, but it LOOKS like a lot of saddles!). Awesome snake with an amazing story.
Congrats!

You should wait until after the first shed to feed the little guy.
As for sexing him you can pop him now..I would wait a while before trying to probe him/her if it where me.
Congrats!

I remember reading somewhere on here that snakes need a certain amount of inbreeding. Can someone elaborate on that? If it turned out to be female would breeding her to the male she came from be too close in line and cause defects? Just curious, that would be a looong time from now. But if that's ok, maybe i'll hang on to the healthy male.

i had a jaguar python like that Randy
i spent hundreds of pounds trying to get to the bottom of it,only for him to drop dead aged about 4 years of age
we even did key hole surgery on his lung, all that showed up was a nice pink healthy looking lung, with small droplets of mucas
we took swabs, but NO infection was found
my vet reckoned he had a condition similar to human cystic fibrosis sufferers
your wee miricale snakes a very nice patterned, good looking, wee guy mate

breeding son to mother imo would cause no problems
i have F2 irians that will be bred together,to produce some even better looking F3's (i hope )
i've heard of carpet line breeding projects, going up to F5,F6 with no issues
cheers shaun

First off miracle is a terrible name and we will have to revoke your man card if you go that route.
Second that mother has some deep seated medical issues from the sound of it. The way I see it is you have four options.
A) Take her take her to a really good reptile vet and spend the money on testing.
B) Re-home her with a full disclosure of her apparent problems and your suspicions.
C) Put her down. How is up to you but I could pm you a couple of suggestions.
D) Do nothing and hope for the best.
I don't know the snake, her behavior or her quality of life so these suggestions are just that, a suggestion. Good luck because it is a very hard choice.

The baby is very nice looking. I'm glad one made it.
But surely I am not the only one that sees the elephant in the corner? Where are all our 'straight shooters'?

You mean breeding a sick female?
Maybe they are scared of Randy! He could probably hurt them in so many ways they are just scared thinking about it. I mean come on the man plays with fire!!!!!
Yea. It's the kind of thing that normally gets jumped all over here.

Oh, it's coming, don't worry. People can't stop from stating the obvious. Like I said I had given multiple Baytril treatments, sometimes she seemed better then others like she was dying. I thought she was all cleared up when I introduced her to breed. Then after it was already done she started showing signs again. S*** happens. Another reason i'm trying to find another option that doesn't include me taking care of her.

Hahaha it just didn't sit well with me.
As for the options BarelyBreathing has PM'd me with some good options for people that may take her, and I will be giving them a call as soon as I make a pot of coffee.
Name the snake Chuck Norris :)

Unfortunately the rescue place was no longer a rescue. The girl laughed and said i'm the second person to call asking that. I'm off to find a home for her. Hopefully the vet has a few people in mind.
Just weighed the new one , 49.5 grams.

Ones that Heinlein wrote. Theyre all good. ;)
But seriously, try ' the moon is a harsh mistress'. It's my personal favorite. And 'Stranger in a strange land' is probably his most famous.

No luck with the female today, but I did get a few signs up. I fed her today and it was so sad. I thought she was going to choke and die. Audible wheezes from the other room.
