That video got brought up once before.
I can't go through those youtube videos anymore, there are way way too many cases of Savannah Monitor neglect all over the place on there.

Yes, but if you remember, I made the rule of no embedding, and we all agreed that it was acceptable to post a link, that on can voluntarily click, or chose not to.
Actually, I am rather pleased that through education people can now tell the difference between a "cool monitor video" and a bad monitor video.
Many people would have though a Sav eating a squirrel was cool before coming here and learning otherwise.

Some things I noticed in the vid.
That is a good sized adult sav. It is actually in very good physical shape. Does not look like the usual super fat sav. It is quite possible that it actually did catch that squirrel. Why does that seem so impossible?
I do not see this vid being anymore cruel than someone showing a monitor eating a dead rat or mouse.
I really do not see a big problem with this vid to be honest. It is obviously not the lizards main diet. It was most likely a one off thing.
Is it a "cool" vid? That depends. If the sav actually did catch the squirrel on its own and ate it, then yeah, I would say its a cool vid. If it was killed prior by the owner, than no, its not a cool vid, but not a particularly bad one neither.
Truth be told, if one of my varanids caught a squirrel and started to eat it, I would record it as well.
I actually have an old vid of my first sav RUNNING after, catching, killing, and eating a 3 foot garter snake it came across in a penned off section in my yard when I lived with my parents.
To the OP, what was wrong with the way the lizard was picked up?

I know and I understand.. I was a little hot headed about seeing something off the forum a little while before I posted that and I guess I was more upset than I thought.

I think that was brought up in the previous conversation, the squirrel was either already dead or very sick.

When a monitor sees a food item, their instincs kick in. Have you ever seen a varanid actually hunt? It is a sight to be seen, thats for sure. That lizard is very capable of catching and killing a squirrel. There are other factors that could have been at play other than it being already dead or sick.
You think that this lizard is incapable of catching a squirrel. What are you basing this on exactly?
Why would the person filming it lie and why would the others in the vid go with it? It just makes no sense.

You believe it may have happened I don't. Deal with it
I myself am fairly new to monitor keeping,so despite what i might express there is more i don't know than know.Nobody usually expresses an opinion saying they are absolutely right,to me someone with more experience like Gregg can bring more experienced based opinion to behaviour we witness.Challenging people to think or look at things a different way should be encouraged.Your response Hail3gh was kinda rude and paranoid

It is perectly fine to state your opinion but you should present it as such. Twice in this thread you present your opinion as factual information here
First there is no way This sav caught this poor squirrel
and here
There is no way that lizard caught him..
Not only did you present that as fact, you also neglected to give reasoning even after I asked you spacifically why you thought the way you did. On top of it all, you do not seem to be interested in listening to experienced keepers and learning something.
Everybody on this page feels that if you dont do things their way Your wrong. Well I hate to tell You but You're not always right...
Well this certainly was not about anything you are doing. It turned into you saying something was impossible that is actually very possible.
I post a video and instantly I get a reply saying how people are sick of these posts. Nah thats not rude,
That person just stated their opinion and it was presented as such.
You guys make me laugh at how quick to crap on people you are
Is this not exactly what you did when you started this thread? A bit hypocritical, dont you think?

Can You tell me where I said that this Lizard can not catch a squirrel? because I dont remember saying that.
Now You tell me why You say this is real? Are you basing this on fact? Were you there? No I dont think so
Well this certainly was not about anything you are doing. It turned into you saying something was impossible that is actually very possible.
I did not say this was impossible I said this instance was not real so if your going to quote me at least get it right

Oh a sav can catch a squirrel, thats no doubt! But the people seem very irresponsible in the video: drinking, picking the sav up while it's eating, just being rude to the monitor, and i just have a vibe that there not one it concerned about the actually husbandry for the animal! Just a vibe :)

Yes, "getting off" on something natural is disturbing.
Like people who sit and make heavy metal videos to monitors and pythons killing prey.

That maybe a good idea. You seem to be carrying a huge chip on your shoulder. Just because someone pee In your pebbles this morning doesn't mean I want to read all of your bile. Seems like something more is going on in your life and you think this is a great place to vent. Well you are right it is a great place to vent but not how you are doing it. Like 'em or lump 'em the people that you don't care for are still going to be here when you sign off for the last time. Good luck and hopefully you can get the knot out of your panties.

I don't see someone putting music they enjoy on a video of their animals as "getting off" on natural behavior. Such a broad judgement is rather silly.

It's not a broad judgement, Some of those videos that people make with "slayer" or "sepultura" screaming "Die" roar.. Die" while filming a rats guts getting blown out it's arse is pretty sick..

A video of natural behavior with some music is sick? I know a lot of reptile people who listen to that music all the time, regardless of what they are doing. Don't like the music turn it off and watch the video.
I'd also like to point out, watching a monitor hunt, kill, and eat actually is pretty "bad ***". It's very interesting to watch such a powerful animal do what comes naturally to it.
Lumping people together is rather silly.

Then music choices aside, You should already know that most of them shouldn't own any herps.... Yet alone a fat, lethargic blob of a monitor.

I do not mind watching vids of reptiles feeding. Even live feeding vids do not bother me. I see no harm in filming it. When you have kept reptiles as long as I have, you know that live feeding is sometimes manditory. However, I do kind of agree that the music can be a bit overboard. Although a feeding vid with Barry Manalo playing in the background would be kind of silly. LOL.
I agree with Wayne for the most part that the usual people posting those vids are not fit keepers but I have seen a few feeding vids with death metal playing that were actually pretty good and the animals look well cared for.
To each their own I guess. All I can say is one of the many things that I dig about reptiles is their hunting abilities and their efficiency in killing their prey. That is how they make their living afterall.

Oh, don't take me wrong, when a monitor grabs it's prey by the head and shakes it so violently that the prey's neck snaps in a millisecond, that is cool as hell.
