I AM WRITING THIS IN MEMORY OF MY PASSED BALL PYTHON ROMEO . HE WAS A BEUTIFUL SNAKE BUT ON WEDNESDAY ,JANUARY 15,2003 AT 1:00 PM I FOUND ROMEO WRAPED AROUND HIS HEAT LIGHT ,HE OVERHEATED AND BURNED HIMSELF TO DEATH. THIS WAS MY FAULT FOR PUTING A HEAT LIGHT INSIDE HIS ENCLOSURE . IT IS BECAUSE OF MY STUPIDITY THAT HE IS GONE, IM SORRY BUDDY , I WILL MISS YOU !

I was not going to reply but...why did you have a lamp *in* the tank? I'm really sorry about your loss but I think we'd all like to better understand what happened.

Hey people don't be too hard on him... I may have been a very stupid idea to put a lamp in the tank but I'm sure he didn't do it just to fry the bp.

Jay: I'm sorry to hear about your loss man... just be more careful next time.

I was not trying to be hard on you at all. I was suprised because you have always seemed to know what you are doing. I totally understand that accidents happen. I just wanted to know what happened and now that you've explained it better, I really don't think it was your fault. We've all made mistakes and learned from them. Again, I'm really sorry to hear about your loss, it's tough losing an animal you love.

I'm really sorry for your loss, I can't imagine how you must be feeling... I'd be a mess, so all my sympathies to you.

It's amazing though how stupid these animals can be! To wrap itself around a heat light to the point of burning itself to death. You'd think they'd have some kind of instinct mecanism telling them "it's too hot here, you're burning!". For animals that thermoregulate, you'd think they'd know when it's too hot. Weird.

Sheite happens..I know how much time and care you put into your snakes..I know of many many people(including reptile stores)that put screened-off lights in enclosures. I do in some of my bigger enclosures, and never had a problem because the snakes are large, but they were not always as big as they are now...it's a dice roll sometimes..

yes I too feel for your loss. I don't know if it was stupidity was it? but maybe design flaw? It is my understanding that snakes' nerves are so deep into their skin that by the time they feel or would feel it they are already very badly burnt or dead? Am I wrong in this understanding?

Alicewave

I think I have heard that as well Them and US. That's why it's so important not to use Human heating pads on full blast.

it might just be me but i find that comment offensive and disrespectful to the animal. it certanly didnt know what the heck a light bulb was and that it would kill it. probably got trapped ::shrugs:: but hey accidents happen! i have my lamp guards bolted to the top of the viv with 4 inch bolts :-) i know theyre not gonna get into there! sorry to hear about it though. i hate it when pets die even more so when its the pretty ones ::sigh:: better luck in the future! 4 inch bolts are the way to go mate!

There is nothing stupid about them. Their nerve sensors are buried much deeper than ours are, and by the time they feel themselves getting burned, its too late :(

XxRachxX: I'm sorry to have offended you with my comment, but it was definetely not my intention just a statement. How you associate it with disrespect, I don't know. The one thing I have the most respect for are animals especially snakes, I wouldn't own some if I didn't.

I said what I said because I really can't understand how an animal that thermoregulates can burn itself to death. To survive they have to constantly move to different areas to achieve to correct temperature needed at the time. This doesn't happen haphazardly when it's cold or need warmth for whatever reason it seeks it just like when it's too warm and needs to cool down it seeks a cooler area. Snakes are extremely effective at detecting temperature gradients and fluctuations, they almost see in "heat vision". So that's where I wonder. How or more WHY would a snake wrap itself a heat bulb and remain there till it died. It's not like it can't tell that the bulb is emitting heat and at some point the snake has to start feeling too warm and needs to get to a cool area. If the snake was found in the lamp's screened box and not around the bulb I could see it being trapped and not being able to get out. So, why does something like this happen? In MY opinion snakes are just not too bright. They sure don't have big brains and they live almost solely on instinct.

So I think snakes are stupid, I still love em and respect them and always will. And I still can't live without the dumb buggers.

im sorry for your loss. we have all done things that we look back on and go "i was so stupid" but there was no fault in it. sometimes things happen that we dont understand when we look back. take it as a lesson learned the hard way. and thanks for sharing so no one else makes the same slip.

well pixie yeah i agree w/ you on the hot and cold thing but the thing was with the heat light it was on a temperture gage it would go to the temp it needed then it would turn off once it was at the temp needed and then it would come back on when is cooled down just to keep the temp the same all the time .....
well romeo rest in peice and you'll never be forgotten ..
he was a beautiful and well loved snake....
loven you always romeo
